I don't understand how people are playing with WASD.

I tried to make it work, but it was so clunky that I gave up almost immediately (well, after couple hours). Using more than 2-3 skills is a chore and you still wanna hit those flasks every once in a while, so I simply don't have enough fingers for it, given the fact that my left hand is exclusively handles movement. WASD+Space kinda occupies all fingers at all times, and if you gonna move your fingers away from WASD and stop every time you need to cast something extra, you might as well go back to point-n-click where all the movement is handled with just one mouse button. It also feels more precise and allows you to move exactly where you need to be, while WASD keeps you trapped in 8 particular directions and feels like you're driving some kind of vehicle.
The way campaign should be played by your second and any subsequent characters: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/3772827

it strongly depends on the skill you are using. Merc is great on wasd and i even started playing my ranger and warrior on wasd
I find WASD movement great on Ranger/Deadeye. I can kite enemies pretty easy, and the movement itself feels intuitive for me. But I don't have years of experience in aRPGs using mouse to move.
I also have a mouse with several thumb buttons so I only use Q E R for skills (with Shift for 2nd skill bar modifier) and have five skills in total on my mouse. I am very used to that control scheme through playing Guild Wars 2 for a few years now.

I very much like that players can choose between control schemes.
I guess it's your fault for not having any side buttons on your mouse? I can burst out 4 skills with my mouse only. Only need 1 and 2 for potion and even there, i can switch the keys so i can use it with my thumbs with c,v,b. Dont blame the game if you can't adapt.
how do you guys set this up? i got 2 side buttons on my mouse and dont know how to use them properly or set them up

Having played World of Warcraft or any other game ever really I have no problems moving with WASD and pressing buttons.
Really love the WSAD.

Playing Sorc and Monk.

Using WSAD QERF M4 M5

Usually using the thumbbuttons for quick skills like lightningwarp or killing palm.

In most cases its just a matter of patience and getting used to.
Gave it a try from release and haven't gone away from it since - it feels pretty natural tbh, if you ever played any other game. I am used to pressing buttons up to 6 without moving away from WSAD from games like WoW. PoE uses common game / FPS keys like QERFT, i have Mouse4 and Mouse5 bound to T and F skills, never needed to and never used the CTRL+key skills but i see that as a potential issue.

Having direct control over movement feels better than click-to-move, where you ultimately lost left click to "Move Only", because default attack / any other attack there would lead to situations that ultimately lead to your demise. Now I can actually use left click to attack and be safe at the same time :-)

Loving it personally, playing ranged classes though (started with sorc, playing witch now) Don't know how it feels with melee.

I dont know what you are using, but you should be able to change your key/input in the option menu. If you can't set up any mouse button, maybe check you mouse setting on your pc, maybe they are deactivated.

I tried WASD aswell for couple of hours. Did not like it. I have been and still am playing WoW for many many years. But its nothing alike movement wise.

Even with left click to move you can still shoot while moving. GGG did an amazing job here. It feels good with left click move. So i dont see the benefit of WASD for myself. A lot more stress on my keyboard hand.

If you are really efficient and good with WASD its probably a tiny bit better, give you more control over precise movements.
