What's the closest class/build I can get to being a Healer/Support Priest?

I don't wanna be the guy that kills things as fast as possible, I wanna be the guy that is a benefit to the entire party through healing, buffs, debuffs, CC, etc.

What class/build is best suited to this? What auras and gems should I be looking at?

The game really isn't built in any way that allows you to make a healing based support character, but just an overall support character is possible.

The class you pick is mostly irrelevant, but there are a few passives you'll want to get. You will need Eldritch Battery so that you can run 6-7 auras which are HUGE for party play. Then you also want to get Conduit, and use skills like Enduring Cry that grant charges. Another huge help for your party members is if you get the Double Curse passive at the top of the tree. With it, you could run Elemental Weakness and Enfeeble curses. These would massively increase your party members' damage and survivability.

To focus on healing, I suggest using the Vitality Aura and a Rejuvenation Totem. Using both of these in conjunction gives a pretty good life regen amount. Keep in mind though, that they are useless for a CI character.

I suggest using the skill Power Siphon with GMP and Chain. Power Siphon has a built in Culling Strike ability so that any enemies recently hit by Power Sihpon will die when they reach 10% of their max health. This is actually extremely helpful, especially for party play where monsters have huge health pools. Also, this skill grants you Power Charges, and if you are running the Conduit passive your party members will benefit greatly. Also, Power Siphon deals lightning damage, which means you will be able to shock stack. Shocking enemies will make them take up to 120% more damage from ALL sources, including your party members.

I would like to constantly run the Purity aura as well, for the resistances across the board. Resistances, regen, and charge building. How is the Templar class? Would this fit?

I would be using a Mace/Shield of course, and either chain armor, plate, or robes. I want equipment that makes me look holy, shiny and gold.
Well I mean, I guess if you wanna be worthless you could make a Ranger.

Closest thing I can think of.
GGG gives me Diablo 2 Teleport? I give them 50 bucks. No questions asked.
All I'm saying is I want to play something that isn't common, something that benefits an entire group, not just myself. I don't want to play DPS.

Low-life + low-mana, full support, dual rejuv totem, running majority of auras. You'd die in 1-hit most likely, and the only reason you'd attack is to get frenzy charges.

Have fun.

What this guy said is completely true. Two corrections: CI characters with Zealot's Oath keystone WILL benefit from vitality and rejuvenation totem, and Power Siphon does NOT do base lightning damage (though if you have lightning damage on your wand, it will deal that!)

I know you said you want mace+shield, but for the build you want, you REALLY want to use a wand + shield and follow this guy's guidelines.
i too fas fo youuuuuuu
I think support characters have little place in PoE in general. Sure running auras, conduit or whatever are cool, but in the end if you can survive, killing enemies is what helps the party most. Especially if you can do that without too much effects that make other people lag.

Power siphon deals physical damage.

That's just it though, I don't want to play this game like diablo, I wanna fill a role that does something other than DPS. I wanna fill a role outside of just "kill stuff, profit."
