Lost HC character while exiting game at full Health

I just lost a HC character after Save/Quitting the game.

I was outside of town, however, I had full hp (as juggernaut). I wasn't even close to dying, nor was I panic quitting away from a mob.

I thought save/quit was instant??? Why was my character migrated to Standard League???

I'm seriously pissed about this.

1. There is no "save" option.
2. What does "Quit the game" mean?

Describe step by step what did you do because you're very unclear and the detalis are important.
I wrote the original post quickly, so let me clarify.

a) defining "Exit"
"Save and Exit" comes from my Diablo 2 era. The key word there is "EXIT" -- that is, when you want to quit from the game, presumably preserving your character in its current state and reverting back to town upon logging back in.

PoE has 3 "Exits", I rarely ever use "to login screen".

However, I very frequently use "to character selection" and "Path of Exile" (to desktop).

After completing objectives in game, to save scroll of town portal, I often exit to character selection, upon which immediately reselecting the same champ to get back to town. I have never had issues with this.

When I'm done playing and want to turn the game off, I just straight "exit path of exile". Upon restarting the game, the character is back in town -- again I've never had issues.

b) my "death"

My character was a juggernaut with high hp, high defense, high regen (two ascendancies completed). My character was smashing through with very little risk at that point. Yes, you can die very quickly in this game, but I had no scares and was rocking some great items.

I was in act 8, lunaris concourse, and had just cleared a bunch of white mobs. My character was at full health.
The area was not totally clear, but there was maybe one monster on the screen somewhere (white mob). I didn't clear the immediate fog of war. I exited to desktop (to go answer my door). My character was at full health effectively. If I had any damage, my life regen would have had me at full.

When I rejoined, my character was now in Standard league.

I quit while being near full life. My character could have easily stood within 99% of white or blue mobs for a long time without dying. "Some" yellow mobs could pose a problem, but I doubt I would have been 100-0'd by anything given my current state.

This is not some lie or cope. I will freely admit I have hardcore characters that die. I just wish that this character could have died somewhere where I could have learned something new, instead, I just had a character lost for no reason (seemingly).

If you have any insight I'd love to hear. I feel like this is just a freak accident/bug of some sort.
Sorry for ya luck!!
You need to use logout macro because that 'saves' your character.
Yeasterday evening on EU servers - was full of crazy server DCs/Rollbacks.

I'm lost almost a map and all loot from it on softcore.
I saw threads about ppl was doing graveyard mirror-tier crafting and lose stuff and corpses during that rollbacks.

I dunno why you people even creating HC characters - in this game with such instability servers work - where you can die easily on HC on 1x random lag spike/DC.

You died because you closed the game, but it didnt log you out. Your character stayed there, some monster came and just tickled you do death.
I feel you buddy. Last night when I was finishing my grind to 100 I had a few wonky instances with very bad latency. Frankfurt seems unstable, Amsterdam didn't perform much better, but London seems fine for now. Always sucks when you die to circumstances that are completely out of your hands. It feels cheap
The opposite of knowledge is not illiteracy, but the illusion of knowledge.
In HC, don't just exit the game unless you know for sure that there are no mobs within at least 3-4 screens, and that nothing has followed you from even further. If I understand it right, it can take a while before the server knows you left. So just exiting is like leaving your character unattended for a while. Also make sure you don't have any degen.

I think if you exit to login or character selection, it sends a positive message to the server that you have left the instance. Better yet, just use a portal. Don't be cheap in HC.

I could be wrong about all this, but that's how I understand it.

When I click on a portal I need to wait for several seconds before it takes me to my HO. Its how the game is at the moment
