Character names being not globally unique

I would NEVER accept that!

We should grind to get letters which we can then form the words with. Some kind of unbearable minigame with small dots bouncing around unpredictably. Once finished after hours on hours, no time limit and no breaks, a random letter is given.

Be careful what you wish for... :p

Aaah, hahahaha :D

That's one way of earning your name as an exile I suppose ;)

Happy to see the suggestion at least didn't go unnoticed. I guess it's a bit too early to ask if GGG are considering alternatives to globally unique names?
i got what name i wanted

As it should be, really.
Also my Name is OK too:), but how about we could choose First and Last Name?(like in an other MMORPG i played:) then we could have nice Unique Names and later on maybe we could find some people whit the Same Last Name. (and create a Family Clan or something xD).
Takahiro the Inferno Necromancer!
My Army of Death is Filled whit Tons of TNT:)!

Holy crap, this sounds like so much fun! xD
I am 100% behind this idea!! I then wouldn't have to use my old MMO character's names
I am fine with the system in place to be perfectly honest. I take pride in finding interesting character names that have previously been unused. This makes me feel one of a kind and unique. Just my personal opinion.
This is me creating a new character:

"Yes, I'll try out an archer type this time! Yeah... I'll try some sort of necromancer ranger! That sounds like fun!" (yes, I'm often rather riled up about trying new things)

*a name automatically and instinctively pops into my head that fits just perfectly to the looks and class and my future plans for her and everything*

"Oh, that's perfect! I can really feel that name!"

*types in name*

"That name is already taken."

"Oh. OK. Huh. Well... An alternate spelling? No. Doesn't look good. Hm. Another name? This one perhaps? But I don't feel that as much. Okay. I thought the first one was rather unique but OK, someone else was before me. Ok, I'll try one of my old names I use in other games... No, that one was taken too. Oh, well. Another time."

It completely smashes my initial drive and motivation and taken down so many notches. Because someone else, in an international and more or less single-server game where I will probably never meet the vast majority of players, somebody else has created a character with the name that felt so right, some time. A character that perhaps isn't being played and in an account that's not used. Or not used much.

I don't really like the idea of a "timeout" on names either. What if I really can't play very often? I might have a demanding job and a lot of other responsibilities. Maybe my computer needs service or I need a new one but can't get one until some months later. I might want to continue playing and suddenly... no, my characters have lost their names.

That feels like yet another strange punishment, on top of the restriction that you can't just pick whatever name you like. Single names tend to run out fairly quickly, then the less common names, and then it'll leave people to just write odd åltêrnat€ spéllïngs.

Someone mentioned surnames. Guild Wars (1) had surnames which, at least for me if I remember correctly, never made my desired name clash with another. However, if I'll try to see through the GGG point-of-view, surnames mean nothing in Wraeclast and wouldn't make much sense (just like a money currency doesn't make sense). Nobody cares of your past or where you came from, and thus your surname is pointless from a lore standpoint.

When there aren't thirty people in town with names like Quackatron or DoorknobMan, or hell, when other characters start referring to your character by any name at all, only then do I think arguments based on a "lore standpoint" start to become useful. Really, who's going to tell a guy named xXhappypantsXx that he shouldn't have a surname because it doesn't make sense? It doesn't make sense already.

Names in this game, as in most similar games, are essentially metagame, well outside the domain of lore, and will likely remain so regardless of which labels like "surname" are applied to them.

Anyway, lore standpoint or no, can we please have spaces in our names, GGG? I know multiple spaces present problems for players typing other players' names, but there must be a better solution; the complete lack of them feels a bit 1995.
Maybe i got another Idea about Names, how about you could first select your Preferred Language (or Native Language) and then Enter your Name?

In Example, You have Selected German and Enter your Name, then the Game Checks if someone whit Preferred Language = German has Selected your Name if not you are Done.

and in Game it could look like this:
Takahiro
(German)

Also whit that you could have Some Takahiro´s that are Japanese, German, English or some other Languages:), and you don´t need to ask where there from xD (if someone are not Good in English and want to speak in his Mother Language).

And the Chance that you get your Proffered Name is Better.
Takahiro the Inferno Necromancer!
My Army of Death is Filled whit Tons of TNT:)!
