So who's brave enough to leaguestart with chieftain or guardian?

I was actually considering making some chieftain build.
Perhaps Vigilant Strike fire conversion shenangians of some sort.

Chieftain looks really juicy as a defensive league starter tbh. Put on a rise of the Phoenix, take some max res passives, use purity of fire and you’re at 89% fire res and depending on mechanics, 90% of the other two.

That max res also makes gear like cloak of flame significantly better. You can use that chest(combos great with formless flame btw) or try to get bigger armor on an exarch chest that gives you +1 max res to each 90 all res. The goal of course is to solve phys defense here.

That leaves getting offense…

RF is basically trivial to sustain on this setup so you get 40% more spell damage out of it if you go spell damage. This will play nicely with that cloak of flame since it’s easy to color for spells. For ascendancy allocation you’re basically pigeonholed into explode, extra increased fire damage from the witch area(I hope passive works make this node better than it looks), or the zero dot resist mod.

Melee skills can get a 7 link out of the ascendancy and you don’t have to rework your defense if you can use a 1H weapon for it.

I’m provably going to give it a try. Just need to figure out how I want to kill things really.

Tasalio's scaleable extra resist might also allow you to use Annihilating Light alongside Valako to solve any dps issues you might have while also being tanky as hell. Potential is definetely there, the issue is just, what else to use? That's 4 out of 8 ascendancy points and for a spell caster, the other options are so god damn useless... then again, that combination might be powerful enough to not even mind having just 4 ascendancy points...

Not everyone needs to start out with the flavor of the month ascendancy. Some people like to experiment, and appreciate a new angle to the game.

This is kind of the way on the internet. What's the point of posting the contradictory opinion on reddit? You'll get downvoted and hidden. What's the point of arguing with people who make threads like 'worst Ascendancy of all time now'? I mean maybe it will be, I can't prove it isn't. I can offer up the advice that as the old builds you relied on old Chieftain for get weaker, new strong ones that weren't 'possible' before will take their place. But most don't want to hear that, they'd rather be mad.
Gonna try a Doryani fist build with chieftan.
League-starting a HCSSF Guardian summoner, looks like it's gonna be fun
Love GGG
D4 garbonzo tho
This really got me thinking. Other than guardian one time and ranger once, I've always league started as a witch.
I was planning to do a bone shatter (mostly because I haven't done it and it looks fun and in theme for this league), but a Chief might be fun, but I'd have to settle on a build I'd like first.
