Game client uses hard locked VRAM amount

I ran multiple heavily juiced maps in standard with Asus monitoring tools. I never went over just under 3GB of VRAM usage on a 3080ti. This seems 100% wrong.

If you look at the last line of this screenshot in the upper middle where it says VRAM usage. My 3080ti has 12GB it should not be getting hard limited to just under 3GB. Do I have a setting wrong with my client that might explain this hard limit of 3GB? I ran multiple maps and never saw it go above this. Regular RAM usage however was always 8GB+ via client graph.

This is intended behaviour.

Is this a similar change (bug) that was introduced and then reverted in 3.18?

Edit: For some reason, trying to post this with URL= tag in-line wrapping cuts off the message from the point of the url tag.. new forum bug.

Hey I remember that, thanks for the trip down memory lane, and thanks for the bug report. :)

Different issue here, though, in that it's working correctly.
Edit: meaning, the client doesn't need to keep as much data stored in vram as it used to. It can go higher than 3gb, or more, if needed in that area etc.

Why would you not utilize more vram if the users hardware has it? I'd rather have extra leeway on the chance the game needs more VRAM, than experience issues because it's clearing the ram more often than it needs to.

I have 24gb VRAM on my GPU, use it.... Many people have 6gb+ as per the steam survey, utilize it.
So... is anyone seeing this issue actually experiencing any performance issues? Genuinely curious since no one reporting this problem on this thread has actually said anything about that.
yeah its unplayable for me has been since the 6gb update last week(
Yeah I've noticed something similar.
POE only uses 1 out of 4 GB on my 1050ti.
Not sure what that's all about.
Performance since last patch 1 or 2 weeks ago is crap.

Define "issues". POE has never performed anywhere near the level of any other games I play, including other ARPG's. With a 3080ti liquid cooled I watch FPS tank to low 40's in Delirium maps, from the typical 141 I play at. Even CP77 (imo the most graphically intensive game right now) doesn't hit FPS as hard as POE. CPU temps are up as unbound FPS increased with the patch (expected behavior), and there are certain functions (like the delve voltaxic shop) that spike CPU temps 10+C for no reason.

Also, as others have said in this thread, not using all of a card's VRAM is less than ideal for many users. In general, you want to use all of a card's VRAM. My guess is that because POE had issues long ago where the cards weren't releasing VRAM and stuttering, that they would rather win that fight and not use all the cards VRAM than use it all, but that is something I am speculating on.

FWIW POE was discussed on the Overclock.net forums because of how much power draw certain settings allow, even exceeding Nvidia specs. Specifically, Shadows + Global Illumination on an unlimited FPS GPU with big power draw would cause cards to exceed their power limits.

That said, in general POE plays well, with several outliers of old systems that likely just havent been optimized yet.
