I always knew MTX was pay2win
 Notice the wording. "Intended" is what they specifically said. Meaning that it wasn't a flat bug, but the numbers were off. How does a microtransaction even has anything to do with damage calculations. Doesnt make any sense.

Pretty sure you both are horribly misunderstanding what the patch did.

" I know what it said, but this is also a buff for builds that use totem's being damaged, aka reflect builds. But ultimately what this means, is cosmetics are hardcoded to affect the modifiers of a skill. Making it pay2win. "You're my Sword's canvas."

I'd imagine it had something to do with, under the hood, summoning a totem without the damage reduction player totems got in 3.16:
Character Totem Life has been reduced by approximately 60%. Totems now take 80% less Damage from enemies, but deal 400% more Damage to themselves (meaning they now take full Damage from themselves). |

What if the cosmetics are copies of the Skill Gem in themselves, and not just modifying the skill visually? As if applying an MTX is actually replacing the original Skill Gem with the MTX Skill Gem? Perhaps this one was just not replicated properly.
