Hoho interesting read. Good luck with the larger company exile.

Thanks.

Looks like most of the old-timers have quit.

And this post will quietly be buried in the Feedback and Suggestions subforum, now that it's been moved here.

Oh well.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised. A lot of people were quitting even when I was still active.

I remember you from way back when. I quit as well, and was gone for around 4 years, until recently trying out the game again due to buying a PS5.

The same issues still plague the game, and I'd say it's even worse now than before. Player power gone nuts, and BS mechanics likewise in a weird attempt to "balance" things. Still a game for the 0.1% community. Seems like the only way to really play the game now, without getting overly frustrated, is to have such a strong character that you can practically ignore most mechanics. Otherwise there will be one-shots galore from offscreen, under your feet, and somewhere in between all that pixelated mess of effects and enemies. The "rate war" is as bad as it was, and I see no resolution to that unless they rebalance the game's resources (life, mana, damage, enemy damage, etc) from the ground up. Can hope for that in POE2, but I don't really believe it. We'll see I suppose...

Unfortunately the mods LOVE to move threads around at the drop of a hat. Doesn't much matter how relevant it is, they'll happily move it into different graveyards.

Those of us who want more interesting combat and reined in speed creep are also kind of the minority, or we're told to "JuST GO BACk tO dAIBlO 2!!!" or to play ruthless etc. without any critical analysis of why its a bad design pattern for the longevity of the game.
Hi Gibbousmoon, I'm still around. Sort of, been playing Last Epoch and Diablo 4 but still poking around in the forums. I can recommend either of those if you're looking for another ARPG to play. Have fun
Over 430 threads discussing labyrinth problems with over 1040 posters in support (thread # 1702621) Thank you all! GGG will implement a different method for ascension in PoE2. Retired!

Poor bugger has heard more than enough about DIV from yours truly. Delicate and complex situation, as I imagine it is for quite a few recidivistic Exiles. ;)

LE remains this weirdly specific counter to a game that honestly doesn't need one. It just needs its 4.0 renaissance. Badly.

Salient points as always, moon, screamed into a void about which we all care far too much.
The name says it all.

Is this valuable? Was it ever valuable? I remember it being useless even back in 2013. That was 10 years ago. Is 10 years ago long enough to assess whether this support gem is pertinent to Path of Exile? If not, then why not?"

Yes, it is a very valuable support gem to the people who want a fishing ring.

Hopefully linked items will show skin transfers otherwise I'll just edit that part out.

For people who want to collect uniques or to have it as a skin transfer then this gem is very valuable.

Dropped from a Rare monster
Player had a Corrupted Slitherpinch equipped
Player had a means of inflicting Fleeing (e.g. Chance to Flee Support or Blackheart)

Useless gems, build-defining decisions that make your character < 1/10 the strength of other characters, that sort of thing. Some people call this a failure to balance the game, but I see it as a much more fundamental failure to pay attention to the different pieces of your own game and how they fit together. I also see it as neglecting your responsibility as designers to guide players appropriately and offloading that role to outside parties, to the detriment of the game and its players.

i've been on both sides. getting to level 80+ or even 90 and "only" doing scratching 100k dps for the longest time.

the difference between a new player going yolo vs one who knows what theyre doing or just simply following a build guide is 50-100k dps VS million-billions dps.

i rarely if ever introduce POE to new people anymore.

YAHOO, DO IT! *

*Thanks, I just needed to scream into the void just a bit more.

'Take it or leave it' is like a lost Atlantis with a lot of evidence left behind to prove it existed.

Yeah, that's pretty much what I mean by "noob-trap." Thanks for the example.

The issue in a nutshell is this:

The primary appeal of an "RPG" video game for most players is customizability.
A) You make your own decisions, and succeed or fail based on those decisions.
B) The "A" in "ARPG" adds manual skill to the above.

So does PoE succeed at either of those two things? Call it a litmus test.

A) It seems to me that 95%+ of PoE players who succeed at the game's highest-end content don't make their own decisions. They copy a build.

Noobs, on the other hand, don't exploit some artificial meta for exploding monster packs, posted on YouTube. Sucks to them them! STUPID NOOBS!

B) So how about B? Does the game reward manual skill over using a meta to explode screens full of monsters? Are league mechanics designed to reward survivability and slow (but consistent) DPS?

Um. Heh. Heh heheh. The very existence of speed-meta league mechanics is, in itself, a noob trap, because the game does a poor job at informing players that defense is so much weaker in most scenarios, and will outright cripple a player for multiple league mechanics.

The smoking gun is exactly as you say: That a person following a build guide will be doing 1000% more damage than someone who is making their own decisions. If non-DPS survivability were more valuable, then this would be FAR less of an issue, but as I just demonstrated, it is not.

I find the suggestion that this game consists of no noobtraps laughable (at best).
Wash your hands, Exile!
For 2) its still that way and got worse to a degree where you play trade economy and want to reach some higher goals its going to be difficult without a screen clearer build and mf only exception being a trade lord where trading is your gameplay loop. I love trading but i learned from my first two weeks of D4 that a slower combat and loot drop tables not balanced around people having magic rarity/quant gear and party bonus can be great fun and works for good gameplay.

3) There is no balanced ceiling there are builds that simply can be 10 to 100 times stronger than others ignoring the investment. Some builds just have a very low ceiling while other builds scale polynominal from different vectors. I think its a matter how big the gap should be. I can not answer what is wrong or right here.
