PoB Now Finds Your Build a Item DPS Upgrade within Your Budget
" Looks to me like they are trying to head off potential malicious actions - "Hey bro, let me know your POESESSID and I'll find you a sick upgrade" - that kind of shit. POB has been using it since forever already, you need to provide it to import your character if your account is private but I guess there is a lot of buzz about this new feature. They should have warned people about this years ago when stash tools and poe.trade started using it. Maybe it wasn't so apparent back then how easily scammable a lot of people were. " But surely the logical progression of this is the very simple "computer says better" green arrow to indicate an upgrade so derided in Diablo:Immortal? After all, the main difference is that ths reduces all the different algorithmic tweaks to a single indicator, "more DPS", and DI has it in-game and not via a complex external tool. Of course, this goes way beyond to search trade for gear (hence guaranteeing that if it is there it is found) whereas DI still uses that antiquated ARPG logic whereby you need to find upgrades yourself.. This is bad.
GGG's stance is to avoid trade being the best way to get gear asap. They can't change loot that fast and now this... I can see this being a major issue that needs to be nipped in the bud right away before reddit throws another tantrum. |

" Bad for the game. First off it just helps GGG be lazy and continued dependence on 3rd party support when GGG should be putting these tools in the game itself. Who knows, this tool from PoB may not even be needed if the in game interface in PoE worked properly. |

Both good and bad.
Good: Easier to find upgrades without knowing everything the game has to offer. Bad: Sort of a "noob trap", as you can easily be blinded by DPS only, forgetting a lot of other essential stats. And to the people claiming this is "cutting down on arbitrary convolution"... Did you see the video? Did you see the weight list? Did you understand it? If not, you WILL make mistakes - and you WILL buy "DPS upgrades" that is hurtful to your build overall. Bring me some coffee and I'll bring you a smile. " That's kinda the point. The timing on a message like this, given the new feature in PoB... it just looks like GGG took this pretty personal. Admittley the feature is a massively powerful tool, and obviously not using OAuth is sus, but this isn't how you address a situation you help foster and create. I'd argue PoB is too big to fail at this point. The amount of PoB users is gigantic, so a mass ban event, or taking ToS actions just isnt possible. If something nefarious or shady happens over at PoB, whether intentionally or a dev gets hacked, that results in an issue with a large amount of GGG customers, that's largely on GGG for this incredible amount of outsourcing they do and having their customers at risk. Yes they cannot control what players download and use. But they could offer a safe, in-house, effective alternative. (Not just PoB) They have made a conscious decision not to do so. The community is already doing extreme mental gymnastics to blame GGG.
So all you really end up having is playing the economy, and plowing maps. And if you want to get anywhere on your character, you are better off mowing monsters down like weeds and just collecting pennies of the ground as fast as possible than any meaningful item hunting.

It will be very hard to make this tool account for everything. Like I noticed the impact of projectile speed on a spark DPS depends on the map layout, it is very hard for a tool to account for everything.

" Pretty easy gymnastics here, maybe a somersault? GGG having their own planning tool, which apparently has been in the works for many years, (also see the Chinese version), eliminates the potential risk to their customers. Same sort of thing happend with TFT and the poor experiences there. Outsourcing QoL and player needs to literally whoever the fuck, isnt great strategy imo. Cheaper yes. On the front end at least. I mean I guess you could blame the players, but then what does that get you? Less concurrency and revenue should something bad happen? Wow what pyrrhic victory that would be. " I'm disappointed but not surprised you're on board with something detrimental to a game you no longer play. I guess it's a version of schadenfreude. |
