No straightforward dialogue with players?

The answer is probably clear: They no longer feel that the interaction in question is as valuable as it used to be, be that because of hostility, childishness, a split community, entitlement, too time consuming or directly counter productive.

Or GGG feels that they know better. Otherwise, why would they ignore alpha testers complaining about loot?

Ignorance and/or time restraint - or very bad communication (platform of communication) between testers and developers.

There's no amount of changes the devs could make to make those players happy

I am pretty sure most of reddit and this forum would be pretty happy if GGG just reverted some of the changes implemented since 3.15. Gutting harvest, AN, lootgoblins, divine/exalt switch, loot nerfs especially div cards and uniques and generally moving a lot of power from tree/gems to gear with support gem nerfs, masteries and other changes. They did some good stuff in the last 1,5 years, like the atlas passive tree, the defense and flask reworks and uber content but most of their changes just excerbated already existing problems even further.

It's not that people want a different POE, they just want the POE back that they already had before GGGs direction change. As for toxicity, GGG kinda brought that upon themselves by outright lying to peoples faces. I guess you can just call it "typical marketing strategy" but at the end of the day, if you keep using words like rework for straight up nerfs while not even mentioning other nerfs happening in the backround hoping players won't notice while completely ignoring all their feedback you kinda ask for it. Sure it's their game and ultimately their choice, but their way of doing it is important and they royally fuck up on that.

I agree. But men smarter than me would probably call this "natural" as a company grows. We see TONS of start-up, indie developers talking, discussing and interacting with the community in the early stages. As this company (and game) grows, and has a lot of grinding wheels in its machinery, they interact less directly, but has way more numbers to do the talking.

Hmm, those are very good points I had not really considered.

When I think of other gaming companies I respect (From Software, Betheseda to pick just two) they hardly ever directly reach out to players for conversation.

Perhaps it is a natural shift, with timing partially driven by hitting a break point where it no longer served a positive function for players or them.

Shame if so, but not unlike many other great gaming companies.
Occasionally i take a look at forums and what i see... well, wouldnt talk to such people either.

Go read the newest manifesto. See if you feel that your intelligence is insulted by the flagrantly obvious way they try to spin ever bigger nerfs and ever more randomization as "solutions". Test your polite smile against gems such as "the burden of predictability".

Its not that they dont talk to the players, its that they have not had anything pleasant to say for a long, long while now.

Not to worry friends, GGG are bound to take us to the limits of sensation. Though if sectioning the skin of your head and inserting a pin in every vertice is not your thing, you may want to look for another game.

PS. DON"T open the mystery box, don't solve the meta puzzle :P
