Who is this elusive "Average player"?

That's the average for gamers in general, that includes ALL gamers of ALL kinds, so it cannot be applied to a specific, niche game.

Also - there are issues with how they got to that number.
GGG have all the analytics and data on their game they need to know what the average player is and how changes affect them. People who play PoE don't have access to the same data and just rely on guessing, and everyone guesses differently.

GGG have stated the perenctiles on numerous occasions for how many people complete the acts, how many reach red maps, how many reach 36 challenges, what % of players hit 90 and in what time frame.

So, no we are not guessing, we're using GGG's own metrics.

Average gamers in POE do not hit red maps, do not farm end game, and certainly do not hit 36 challenges.
The "average" player means nothing. The people who complain believe they are the average, and therefore imply that their playstyle and opinion is shared by the majority. This is obviously not true.

I love the replies. But yea, it is a genuine question. In my group of friends we are quite the diverse bunch. Some have families and cant play a lot and tend to not even farm high tier reds in leagues. Othes hit T16 do a bit of alch and go and neve do bosses, and a few of us really go at certain league mechanics. We go HARD at them.
And so far, only the alch and go players are happy over the league. And don't misunderstand, even the few of us who go hard at a mechanic, don't fall into the giga juiced category. One guy religiously loves legion and heist, he is pretty happy atm, then we have others who enjoyed harvest or breach, well i can say WE are not that happy in this case. Those mechanics just feel like i wasted the chaos on the scarab.

I just have no idea why even bring up AVERAGE tho. I thought PoE was so great because it nearly always offered players a logical next step into what to do, untill you actually hit the point where you are running 4 winged scarab T16 maps with 100% delirium full sextants giga mega ultra atlas tree or whatever.

normally, the reason you bring up 'average' is because people tend to think of themselves as closer to the average than they actually are (for some types of characteristics). So psychologically and rhetorically, it lets people (at least ones aligned with you/on your side) insert themselves and think your stance is justified; as well as thinking that they're more numerous than they actually are, which makes it easier for them to justify.

From a communications perspective; I'd guess PoE used it simply as a result of copying rhetoric they've heard elsewhere.
1.1% killed Marvin on steam. Considering that at least a good third of that has been boosted.

Also it is a GaS, there is average "spending" player, the average "recurring player" who may pay but hasn't yet and so on and so on :). To engineer a product this way, there is marketing involved, at the end of they day need to handle the bills, they have well oiled personas wich are parts of their secret of fabrication.

We may blame them for releasing/updating things in some ways that puposely deteriorate player experience (I find it horrible and I would play the game more regularily if there was not that) but at the end of the day it is a company, so there is a business model.

Damn they bit their tail really hard few time in the last 2 years, I don't know if I still like PoE right now and I'm sure that I'll participate even in future leagues...

wow I dont think I ever played more than 8 except in HS

Well below avg it seems

The seasons I participate in takes me all season to reach end game bosses - ive only had 36 challenges once and that was because I broke my ankle that season and was at home a lot

Nowadays after 9 years playing this game i can manage about 5 maps before I get bored so like 30 minutes
Git R Dun!
