Why is thorns a thing in this game?
So serious question: Why are there stats like Thorns (reflect damage to attackers) in this game?
I feel like there are several absolutely useless stats in this game that should just be deleted, i mean if a stat is so bad (like thorns) that even if you roll it as a T1/T0 you still get disappointed because its 100% useless and took one of your affixes/suffixes. So why not just delete all useless stats? Would make crafting better and therefor giving a tiny buff to players. Last bumped on Aug 11, 2022, 4:03:42 AM

GGG likes useless items (which is why 1,000 trash rares drop in high end maps).
It's also weird to kill Sirus AL9 and get a rare with like a Tier 8 life roll, a Tier 6 resist roll, and a Tier 9 speed roll. I get he should not drop mirror quality gear but cmon.... Anyway, agree it would be nice to simply roll no affix/suffix rather than see so trash mods in the pool (life on kill, thorns, <20 regen per second, etc.). What if thorns gets the life regen treatment? Where life regen rolls used to be pitiful but now after significant boosts they are at least somewhat desirable.

Everything is relative. Something is good only because an opposite exists. 'Bad' stats not only need to exist, but will *always* exist because of relativity.

I played a few thorns (retaliation) builds in Grim Dawn and loved it. Other than minions one of my favourite build types in arpg's is get super tanky and have monsters/bosses kill themselves by attacking me.
CWDT and Vaal Molten Shell were fun but not quite what I wanted to satisfy this playstyle in PoE. Hopefully thorns could become a thing somewhere down the road. Maybe change the affix to 'thorns deals 25-50% more phys dmg to melee attackers" instead of "reflects 25-50 phys dmg to melee attackers" and give us a way to get base thorns from armor. "The key to winning any fight is simply staying alive."

" for good affixes to exist, there need to be bad affixes. the bigger the differece between good and bad, the more lucky those will feel who hit a good roll on a item. you need really bad affixes in the game which destroy items because otherwise every item you find will be "kind of "good", which would result in the game not being able to drop them very often in the first place. this is a multiplayer game after all, every good item you find and sell prevents another player from finding a upgrade for himself and feeling gratified. age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!
