Who thought buffing 1 skill to spam is good gameplay? Oh ye the D2 people. New Flash it's not.
Why did I quit Black Desert?
From spamming 1 skill over & over. Black Desert had less utility skills at lvl 40 or less ailments. Than a lvl 10 WoW mage has. I don't want to throw my shield 400 times to lvl 4 times for 4 hours of grind. As the shield throw does more dps than the other lesser dps skills you don't need to use. So shield throw it is. Nothing to stun, slow, or combo, just shield throw dps. Black Desert gameplay nutshell. I know D2 had 1 skill to spam. Tho again not a fan of d2 limitations. Lost Ark had 8 skills & LA seemed overly too mobile or kid friendly for its skill list. LA's skill list barely scrolled down. Not much of a skill tree for Lost Ark either. & No gems for Lost Ark to tweak the effects. Even tho POE has better gem effects & better skill tree. It doesn't have better action skill combos. Since no Arena to test duels. Makes for less combos. I like playing with as many active skills as possible. Tho people will tell you to main 1. Obviously you may play however. Tho yes this game leans to the 1 spam skill over some strategy. Multiple combo skills should a #1 feature & buffed 1 skill spam shouldn't even make the list for dev aim. Also the dash travel for poe, isn't say as good as a dodge roll like Dragons Nest had. So dodge rolls would be good to have improved upon too. Making it a active effect. pvp or no pvp, dodge rolls are awesome. More so than a slower less active button mashed dash for example. Spamming 1 skill makes for bad gameplay and you should NEVER make a games endgame have anything to do with that ever in the history of gaming ever to ever exist gaming wise. Gaming is for skill & strategy, not racing or spamming 1 skill. POE is working on its support gems still & added some new ones. & their are batman utility gems too that aren't dps focused to use for poe. Yet still ye too heavily about 1 gem being overplayed. Or overbuffed. That era needs to die off from POE forever. Time for skill combos, planning, strategy, link gems having more utility, new ailments, healing gems, random gems, & just more reason to use at least 2 to 4 more active skills. At least for the new POE 2 endgame, that more active skills are required. & That people who buff 1 skill are less strong than people who use like 2 to 8 active skills. Poe is a square peg.
you want a game that fits in your weird isosceles pentagram triangle hole. A lot of us are HAPPY with poe being a square peg. we do NOT want whatever the hell you want. you have outgrown poe. THAT IS OK. expecting poe to morph into whatever the hell you are asking for IS NOT OK. you need to find a new game, NOT expect poe to radically change and become that game. |

Their isn't a new game. This game isn't able to update past previous talks?
I already spoke of the mmorpg market, it's no available for anyone to mention as a option. POE is all there is. For fantasy rpg. Also I played D2 a ton. People need to stop acting like I haven't played D2 as much as they have, if not more. Played Warcraft 2 prior to D2 as well. Probably played W2 & perhaps D2 more so than some of these reply'ers, who stuck to Baldurs Gate after WoW began. POE2 is working on their spear animations for this very topics reason. So this IS something the devs want. They just aren't there yet. Not to mention they added new link support gems. Altho yes, the game should move away from passive gems & make poe rely on active gems more so for POE2's endgame. 100 people towns with hang out fields. Witcher taverns. Free hair style options. Try Lost Ark and Last Epoch. They may be more to your liking.

NGL I feel the same way as OP. I’ll never forget when theorycrafting prior to beta testing D3 came about. Probably the most hype I ever had for a video game looking at the Monk and its three-hit combo system that (at a glance anyway) favored weaving different active skills for each hit, demanding a certain degree of timing and skill that got more and more demanding the more attack speed you got. Yeah, what a let down that ended up being. Not only was the best strategy never to do that, most of the best Monk builds don’t even utilize one spirit generator combo. Then on top of that, Monk never really even excelled as a class above the others. PoE certainly would seem like the type of game that should award someone for using multiple active skill gems in a build. I would prefer a game that offered a power spike of 20-30% per active skill gem used. Implementation wouldn’t necessarily be easy, but yeah. Ditto to the OP.

Stroggly disagree. PoE has divertifeing more then ever pathofbuding, their litrlly thusands of tons of buding. You go overcupped resitaces, max speling supresion,+75evocation,1500000armoureding,8+k life, redunced physics as damaged, full truple aura with ingreased efect, blocing speling and physics hit and tft profesonaly craftered actully tailwounded boot. I can defaultack with any skill, you eficient trade 4+55 exday. Any profesonaly plyer can pathofbuding 400-500 ex mid bujdget buding with some investimenting.

A lvl 12 WoW mage (2004), gets to sheep, shoot frostbolt, shoot fireball, fireblast, frost nova, teleport, frostbolt & fireball fireblast for the kill.
Black Desert at lvl 40 you spam 1 skill, then hit a ultimate per minute, as all your skill list is a dps only skills. Zero utility or ailments. Shield Throw. Shield Throw. 40 more Shield Throws later. Korean grind. POE at lvl 12 you spam 1 skill. Then people build around that 1 skill which I half respect as they may find ways to boost a skill that takes gamer IQ. Still overall ye no game should prioritize the 1 skill spam button besides say a mobile phone game. These days. It's a simple fix. You don't have to rework the entire start or mid game. Just when the game designs to add more new endgame zones & give players another 20 extra levels to attain, while making the grind to 100 easier to attain. As the new endgame lvl is 120. So from lvl 80 to 120 you make POE more active gem focused then passive gem focused over time. & wa la this issue is fixed. You just made active gems more of the priority. 1 boost skill builds still exist, tho they aren't this mainstream way of building anymore. & More new gems for active skills are granted for lvl 80 to 120. Or new lvl 60 to 120 gems. Or simply make party gems for party zones that are tougher, thus more active gems needed for these endgame zones. Tho POE'ers like to limit what " Party People " get to have. Ultimately you want more skills to use than Maplestory. Lost Ark as stated before: Had a small skill list. Like less than 20 skills per class. Then only 3 variations of every skill for the skill tree. Practically a mobile phone game as for a skill tree or active list. Lost Ark has 8 active skills, tho since you only have 19 total skills, that 8 doesn't seem like anything really. Not enough per avatar. This title sounds brash, tho really ye if 1 hit bosses are the problem. NO WONDER. You got a game destined for builds to be built around 1 skill only. & You don't understand why 1 hits happen so often? Maybe stop building your hero's around 1 skill's dps & maybe the bosses would also stop 1 hitting people so often. Sounds more like this game focuses on passivity. Passive buffs. More than actual gameplay. No wonder most of the 1 hour podcasts are mainly about items. Also as for passivity, I'd turn necro summon gems to more active uses, where they summon for half the duration & after the duration a new active combo you have to hit to effect happens. & I'd also get rid of autobombers entirely. Everyone wants this game to still have action, tho not like mowwing a lawn. More like a rts fast paced strategy game. & I still don't find the skill tree planner as flexible as possible, if talking about build skill. Yet I already posted about wasted stat links traveling, to the other side of the unique tree board. " Try Lost Ark? " I was the first to have 8 lvl 50's when the game trended. I made the most popular amazon forums post on p2w that they ever had ever. 22k views. & then made all the best posts for arena pvp. Probably many people left over my posts tbh, I review games like Angry Joe would. Just without the channel yet. 100 people towns with hang out fields. Witcher taverns. Free hair style options. Right now the biggest limitations towards using multiple skills on your character is the limitation of the avaiability of sockets and links on your gear that you can use to fully optimize each and every skill for damage potential, and because it's often pretty much good enough to have one main skill, supplimented by supportive / added effectiveness ones and movement.
Luckily, PoE 2.0 is looking to change that, since the sockets and links will be on the SKILL GEM, rather than on your gear, which looks like you'd be able to use more skills. Whatever you're wanting there, OP, I am happy to disagree with anyhow, once you read past the anger towards the game. I do suggest to try Last Epoch, if PoE does not suit you in the one skill only department. It has less skills, but it certainly allows for you to play with some more variety within its customization. |

" You know, you might make it to a higher level when you realize that you should be using at least two active skills. If you had made it to a higher level, you'd understand that there is more planning and strategy that comes into play with the harder content. Don't get me wrong, I have to alternate characters just to change it up after a while. But after seeing what D3 had to do to incorporate different powers for each archetype, it's not surprising that the original D2 approach largely remains the same. We dont need "new" gems - we need the currently existing gems to be more on par with each other. Yep, totally over league play.

" 100% this. If you're only using one button to play PoE, your build is not being used optimally. And that's true for just about every single build in the game. Now, it's possible for you to be so overgeared that you only NEED one button; power creep in modern PoE has gotten absurd, after all... if you put a couple hundred exalts into a Lightning Strike Berserker and hit one billion DPS, you probably don't need any other buttons. But if you are trying to get the most out of a build, you definitely should be using several support skills. I've made builds where I literally ran out of keybinds many, many times. And I'm obviously talking about skills in active use while mapping; I'm not even going to count generic set-and-forget buffs like auras, heralds, blood rage, golems, etc. Or movement skills for that matter, although I think more than 99% of builds are going to use at least one of those and it's pretty easy to work some utility into that as well (Arcane Surge on Flame Dash, etc). But I think it's important to looking at a few specific examples, rather than talk in pure abstractions. I've played three different characters in Sentinel to endgame: a cold conversion EK self-caster, BLS Chieftain, and Impale Shield Crush Slayer. For the Slayer, I'm using both Ancestral totems, Molten Shell, Call of Steel, a Pride Divine Blessing, and War Banner. Aside from the obvious defensive benefits of MS, activating the banner, Pride, and totems gives me about 55% of my total single target DPS. It's not exactly a small boost. And I can't even imagine using Shield Crush to map without a second skill; I'm using Call of Steel for this but I know a lot of people use SST in a 3-link. The EK caster uses Arcanist Brands to apply Sniper's Mark and exposure, Vortex supported by Bonechill, and Tornado. I don't know how much my damage would drop if I only used EK because I honestly have no idea how to calculate Tornado's damage, but it would be a lot. Sniper's Mark by itself is about 20% of my EK DPS. And, frankly, the build is pretty fragile, so doing juiced T16 content would be basically impossible without guard skills, preemptive permachills, etc. The Chieftain is the simplest build, I guess, in that I'm only using ancestral protector, Assassin's Mark, and Wave of Conviction to boost my damage and Molten Shell for the usual reason. But that's still four offensive/utility skills in addition to Consecrated Path, which is what actually kills things, and NONE of them are realistically optional: more than half of my CP damage comes from the combination of (Phantasmal) Ancestral Protector-Enhance-Combustion. I honestly had no idea people were trying to play Path of Exile as a single-button game. Or, rather, that people were doing this past level 50. It's ridiculously sub-optimal, to the point of being some kind of self-imposed streamer meme challenge. But it honestly explains a lot of the threads I've been seeing where people talk about how the game's too hard now for non-meta builds. I mean, sure, I guess the game WOULD be a lot harder if you made a bad build and then played it badly, but why would anyone choose that option? The typical PoE character has 6 gem sockets in their weapon(s), 6 in the chest, and 4 each in gloves/boots/helm. USE THEM. There's literally no excuse for NOT using all of your sockets; the laziness argument doesn't even apply because it's far harder to play the game with half your DPS missing than it is to push a few extra buttons. |
