Why are we regressing? The existance of "Effigy".

In 3.1.0 [War of the Atlas patch] you removed the ability for "Reflect" to roll onto rare monsters.

For the one's that haven't played the game for that long, for a good ammount of time the game had two Nemesis mods (The precursor of Archnemesis today), which was basically similiar to the effect of Reflect you can roll on maps today.

It existed as an aura first, meaning every enemy around the Reflector-Rare would deal back either 14% of physical or elemental damage taken back to the source, which more often than not was the player. It was a genuinely hated mechanic, that nobody appreciated, most were appaled by, got changed into no longer being an aura, before ultimately being removed in 3.1.0 in good riddance.

Now, the Archnemesis mod "Effigy" in 3.18 Sentinel does the following:

Summons an Effigy of a targeted player (10 second cooldown).
Effigy links to the target player. While linked all damage from Hits taken by the Effigy is also taken by the player as reflected damage.
Effigy can taunt other Enemies to attack it.
Running away from the Effigy will sever the link between itself and the player.

It boggles my mind as to why a yearly hated forced mechanic, gets re-introduced, in an even deadlier shape? Here's a list of what's so wrong with this:

"All damage from hits taken by the effigy, is reflected to the player"
You thought 14% reflect was a lot in maps? Imagine 100%!
Additionally, most builds clear packs with AoE skills, skills that chain, skills that pierce, etc. Basically, they will hit multiple enemies at once. Suddenly, one of these enemies, happen to be you, too, and thus, you get the incredible chance to figuratively "kill yourself".

Effigy can taunt other Enemies to attack it.
As if getting hit by YOURSELF wasn't bad enough, the monsters get to freely swing at you, too. It's a decoy totem, that hurts you. Nothing skillful about it, just get swung at.

Running away from the Effigy will sever the link between itself and the player.
THIS is the counter, but the question is, how does that make for a fun gameplay loop?
You run at a pack, can't attack it, because on the off-chance it's effigy you are killing yourself, unless you're playing non-hit DoT (Toxic Rain, RF, Caustic Arrow as examples), run away, run back, kill visual cluttering enemies, realize it was / wasn't effigy, carry on? Hardcore in shambles.



This isn't even excuseable anymore. You knew how much people hated reflect as a mechanic. Plenty of people quitting on you as well thanks to it, and yet you believe such a snooze fest implementation was "necessary"? Worse even, worth to keep?

Why fight progress?

wait... can YOU hit the effigy? or only the monsters? what about your own minions/totems?

actually it doesnt even matter, this mechanic is terrible either way since you will 100% instantly die in many situations no matter what build you are playing thanks to this mod. just remove it.

You as the player can hit the totem as well.

Just had a friend die in hardcore to it by flameblasting himself :D

I don't know wether the totems purposefully attack it, nor if minions do. Judging that the effigy isn't "allied" to you, it seems that this is a possibility.

The link is quite long ranged, too. The effigy can be JUST outside your screen and still be active (albeit it's just barely a screen)

Precisely, it's just a terrible design. We're supposed to see this thing in the chaos of combat avoid hitting it? Who thought that was smart?

Unless they honestly think forcing builds into maxing out reduce reflected damage taken on top of every other defensive layer we're being forced to build, just for this one specific modifier. Fun... What happened to "our builds from siege of the atlas will work exactly the same in sentinel"?

Yeah basically this.

From reading the description in this thread I assumed it was that only enemies can damage the effigy because it sounded completely insane lol. Does it at least have a like massive 5 seconds startup animation/delay as it starts to form or something? Because ceasing all player damage to break this connection sounds really hard already, ignoring it sounding unfun as hell.

Imagine playing something like cremation where you have several 8 second long geysers shooting all over the screen, not like you can cancel those "woah time out, let me stop hitting".
