The core propblem, for why trade is necessary is that you cannot find every item yourself, either you craft yourself a character or you depend on items which you will not find yourself when you need them.

trade is not necessary. theres people who have created a brand new account and hit lvl100 in a couple of days with 4 stash tabs in solo self found hardcore. you dont need to trade, at all, no one needs to trade.

trade isnt supposed to be frustrating to get you to spend more money because you ar eingame trading for longer or cheat. its intentionally non streamlined because trade itself is a much more streamlined way to get anything tradable than actually playing the game, so the design is there to push you towards having fun by playing and finding things rather than trading. its left inefficient to slightly offset trades inherent extreme efficiency.

they want trade to exist in order to give items a sense of value, they dont necessarily want you to actually trade, they would probably rather you didnt because trading accelerates your gear progression and makes your drops feel worthless.

they dont balance the game around players who trade a lot, they have stated most endgame players dont trade, and most of the minority who do trade make only a handful of trades in a league. the amount of actual big non stop traders is really a minority of the player base, even of the endgame player base. these players are essentially overpowered and play an unbalanced game. there are a lot of players who will never trade no matter what and making sure trade isnt super easy allows the game to be balanced around people who dont trade much.


almost all the really elite skilled players who play the game for 1000s of hours are playing in ssfhc. theyre not trading and theyre certainly not rmting. the reason they play ssf is because they spend a lot of hours, the more you go full trade the quicker you will burn through the games content. the time sink is not trading, they dont make trade take time so that traders spend longer playing, they make trade as unattractive as possible to keep you away from trading in the first place and keep you doing the fun thing which is playing the actual game.

You dont need to trade. I and others beat everything in this game with no trade. I've probably found at least one of everything too. Super rare S tier stuff like voices, badge of brotherhood, unnatural instinct, The squire, headhunter, etc I dont do it in HC like Snorkle_uk's example but yeah thats where the best players are. in SSF HC. They often make 100 before SC league players. No reason to trade other than wanting things easier. Psychology wise, I'm dealing with people all day PoE is my alone time and don't want to interact with anyone so SSF is right for me. I've never even joined a guild in 8 years. I also stopped making build guides because ppl bugging me too much. SSF is way to fly.

Out of curiosity - is it even possible to beat everything in the game without getting more than 7 challenges this league?

I guess you for sure get challenges 4, 6, 8, 9, 21, 29, and 35. You could argue that you also have to get 28, 16 (you could technically not touch the Ascension Altar), and 10. You will be pretty hard pressed to not complete 1, and there are a few others that you can technically avoid, but will very likely get.

Well if you play strictly crafting gear you are probably right, I am not into that too much. I love to use Uniques. I always try to create my own builds and use almost 100% Uniques for it. I never found all items, and I do not know a single person who did, one in my guild found a Mageblood this ladder, and it got all attention, but besides that nobody found anything of special interest. When I played D2LOD I always found a few really good items, not in PoE.

So if you want to run around in your crafted trash, I think it works out well, but it is a completely different game from mine. There is just too much to read up about crafting that I cannot achieve, because I am already diving into the game mechanics to build my own builds, which with a bit effort even work for me.

This Ladder I created a CastWhenStunned Character that uses 5 rares, and is worth less than 3 Ex. It is not the fastest or strongest, but it can actually afk kill most map bosses, which is what an old man like me is looking for. I am actually working on a more expensive alternative that can do the lvl 81 Uber Labs too, because that is where it cannot sustain anymore (with sustain I mean go afk in traps or Uber Izaro fight).

For my kind of building I require trade. All people I know trade or used to be trading a lot. I found 1 Item of all the items that I use, and that is a rare ring.

Also I do completely disagree with your view on people and how you define the "best players". The best players are friendly and like to help. That is what makes a good player from my perspective.

You are only talking about the fastest players.

im talking about the most skilled and knowledgeable players who play the most hours and achieve the most in terms of beating the hardest content in the hardest conditions.

who also happen to be streamers who make guides for everything and offer advice to the 1000s of people who are watching them play all day every day, so the best players in the game as in they are the best players, and also the most helpful players, they do more for helping the path of exile community than anyone else.
