Diablo 3 my take
Ok some back ground, I started playing the first Diablo in demo form before the game was released. Played hours of it, way to may hours. Played the Hellfire addon. Got Diablo 2 the day it came out, played thousands of hours, was addicted. Then the expansion came out, again addicted.
So I am a big Diablo fan, but not a fan boy. Actually more a fan of the genre. I have also played Nox, TQ, the TQ expansion, Sacred and its expansions, and Sacred 2. Oh and also Torchlight. Im going to enjoy playing Diablo, but I can see already it isnt really a squel in style or game play to the early Diablos. Main thing, I keep finding myself feeling Im playing Torchlight, and I have to say of all the games of the genre that I have played, Torchlight was the graphic stle I enjoyed the least. Looks like the new developers are Torchlight players that decided to make a Diablo game. Other frist impressions, the skill set up is so watered down, but still enjoyable, more like the limited skills of the first Diablo. And so far, after getting to Cain, then to the graveyard, it is very easy. WIll continue to play it since I love the genre and will find plenty to like about it, but I am looking forward to POE and GD much more. Primairly it is very subjective, the art style of those two titles are much more in line with the previouis Diablo games and reflect the atmosphere I expect from such games. |

" I felt the entire first act was mediocre at best and completely under whelming. Once I got to act II and the areas opened up, the landscape and visuals improved and using different attacks was effective on different types of enemies I started to enjoy it and it began to feel like 'Diablo'. Though I still don't like some of the design choices Blizzard made (like no standard attacks, buying success in the auction house, and no choices to be made when leveling up), it does becomes a heck of a lot of fun to play. Thankfully the auction house is not available in Hardcore mode so once I play though it once I'll probably just play HC mode from then on. Last edited by RWTD_Burn#0944 on May 16, 2012, 1:14:13 PM

I was one of the most anti-D3 people prior to release, mainly due to their design choices and the apparently watered down easy mode of character building. But upon playing it it was actually quite fun. I got through the first two acts yesterday, despite the terrible server issues. I'd much rather be at home playing today than at work..... although that may not be saying much.
It was a matter of expectations vs reality. I could still argue that PoE is more faithful to the idea of D2 than D3 is due to your increased freedom is character design. D3 wasn't was I was expecting a successor to Diablo to be, but it is quite fun nevertheless. Playing a barbarian, I had to change out my active skills as different situations arose more often that I would have expected. There was a balance between damage and survivability you had to manage, as well as between single target vs multi-target abilities. If I got a new weapon, I would often have to choose a skill layout that complimented it (due to different attack speeds, or 1h/2h weapon). Still not sure if the game will have anywhere near the replayability that D2 had. I don't see any reason to ever remake the same class again. But so far I am having fun with it. In Wraeclast, if someone tries to kill you... you just kill them right back. Last edited by Trapperkeeper#6979 on May 16, 2012, 1:43:19 PM

I've only finished Act I, and while I enjoyed it somewhat it wasn't ultimately what will keep me coming back like D2 did for so many years. Maybe my perception will change if/as I play more.
While the line between action and rpg is not a black/white one, I feel D3 is much more toward the Action end than the RPG end of that spectrum. Moreso than PoE. I found myself not bothering to smash barrels and pick up gold. I just want xp, but given that I don't really have a long-term vision my character (due to the situational nature of D3's skill setup ideology) even xp grinding was a bit meh. I know I can go and buy better gear at the AH without feeling dirty like I did in D2 when I bought a Windforce from an external site (I'm not hardcore enough for Harcdore), so I'm a lot less fussed about grinding for loot too. In summary, so far a fun action game, but not D2 or PoE, for me. I also far, far prefer PoE's art style. Petrov. Last edited by mrpetrov#7089 on May 16, 2012, 2:14:16 PM

@OP - about the weird style - Blizzard has never ever created a non-cartoony game. The most realistic thing they ever made is Blackthorne, followed by StarCraft. They are really good at making cartoony violence, but it wasn't them that brought is the awesome, dark, gritty, gothic Diablo games, it was another studio.
Games were better when devs didn't listen to player feedback.

" Yes yes, and that other studio wanted it to be a turn based claymation game. Thankfully Blizzard changed things around and gave us Diablo. “God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I will never die.”

Considering D3 is a loot game so far I've found the drops fairly boring - I'm hoping than things get more interesting at higher lvls - I'm enjoying the backstories that gradually come out for the mercs and other characters.
Overall I get the feeling that all the polishing and simplifying of the game has removed some of the fun - but I'll be doing a playthrough with each of the characters once at least. *Now with added Kiwi*

" ^ I often like to think, even though I'm not perfectly right nor wrong, that there is a (howevere slight) difference between "Hack and Slash", "Action RPG", and "RPG". The early Elders Scrolls were, in my humble opinion, of the Action RPG kind, that went down the RPG path (Oblivion, Skyrim). It looks to me like that early Diablo was Action-RPG, and has chosen the opposite path towards Hack and Slash. Of course, I have played Oblivion and Skyrim, and of course I'll play D3. With regards to POE, it's Action RPG for sure atm. Less speedy / pacey than a HnS; not quite a full RPG neither. In my opinion, it's something worth of note. And of course, that's why I'm still on POE too. :) Baguette, garlic, cheese, wine...
... and a good hack 'n slash to play while munchin' the above. Yes, I'm french. |

Wait till you get to act 2. Lol.
I think I'll do a review on the game on this forum some time. ''Stand amongst the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honor matters. The silence is your answer.'' IGN: Vaeralyse Last edited by Tagek#6585 on May 16, 2012, 7:01:19 PM
