How can I get more survivability for this melee ranger build?
I'm trying to come back to the game with and old character. Just using a pretty decent claw I have and some of my best evasion gear. However, since I'm a ranger I get only about 4.5k life, 24k evasion, 28% block and 27% spell dodge and I have fortify on my 6Link.
For some reason this is a very squishy character even in tier 1 maps. I just started unlocking the new atlas and I was already deleted 2 times in two different maps by normal/blue mobs (from 100% to 0% in less than 0.5sec). It feels like I need to instakill the entire screen otherwise I'm very vulnerable. Could you guys give me some advice how I can improve my survivability? Is there some defensive aura that helps melee builds survive these days? Are there good ways of generating endurance charges as a ranger? Is it even possible to get 5k life in this part of the tree? I still don't have Wind Ward unlocked from my ascendancy, would that make me mouch tougher? This is a Path of Building code for my character:

you probably want to drop acrobatics and just try to cap your spell suppression, dont convert it to dodge.
heres a pob of a melee ranger with 7500 life and capped spell suppression https://pastebin.com/C6n1Yhxc if you wanted to go full silly you could stretch to 8k life, ud only have the large cluster, the 6 jewel normal slots, then another 25 points left over for damage and the build would probably be bad... but ya u can get 8k life on a melee ranger if you really wanted to. https://pastebin.com/cEZ9c1SR youre probably better getting around 6k and then going harder on the damage. endurance charges, just enduring cry like anyone else i think, i dunno if theyre much help tho without a lot of other phys damage reduction for them to add on to. Acrobatics not worth it.
Your chaos resist is -60 which is really bad, its not like in the old days anymore when chaos resist was non needed. There is a lot of chaos damage now. Get 2 small cluster jewels in the open sockets and put in something with either life or something with this: https://www.poewiki.net/wiki/Enduring_Composure You could also consider getting anything (like jewels) that gives you chance to blind on hit since this goes very well with evasion chars. You could also use Defiance Banner (10% reserve) for more defense and crit debuff on enemies. You could also craft endurance charge on rings. Aside from that roll Spell suppress chance and chaos resist on your gear, your gear is like poe 3 years ago stuff. Just because I'm paranoid doesn't mean they're not out to get me. Acrobatics and Spell Suppress (50% to take 0% vs. 100% chance to take half) is not the same. If a hit would otherwise kill you w/o spell suppress but you'd survive it with, you have a 100% chance to live and heal back up whereas with 50% dodge, if you fail the coin flip you die.
This is also why armour is better than evasion right now: Armour smooths out your damage so you can survive the hits whereas Evasion kills you when you fail the roll. |

" I've added Enduring cry since I last posted, but now I don't have enough keys from the main window to use all my skills.... It is nice they added the secondary keybind options, but the build is becoming kinda ridiculous to play with so many keys... I will test out a few maps with Agressive Bastion annointed. Maybe it can be good enough to generate charges on mob packs and I will have to enduring cry only on bosses. |

" im not suggesting you switch to that tree, you asked if its possible to get 5k life as a melee ranger, im just showing you what melee rangers who have 7-8k life without a kaoms heart look like in pob so you can get more of an idea what the possibilities are. you got to remember every jewel slot is 7% life, so if you got 6 jewel slots thats another 42% on your build. i play rangers quite often, with bows or melee i would always get 7k life, i wouldnt play a char with less than that normally. BUT, even in softcore i do play the game more like its hardcore. if you look at streamers etc in hardcore and check what theyre doing their builds are usually 7-8k life with 1-6 million damage. the meta in softcore for similar top end builds is more like 4k life with 10-40 million dps. so it depends where you want to go, you may not be able to reach either of those top ends but theres a reality of pursuing one or the other where if you go the hc style build route youre gonna get 6k life even if u cant reach 7-8k, but your damage is gonna be 500k to maybe 1.5 million. if you go the sc route then you are gonna get 3.5k to 4k life and maybe you get 5 million dps. but youre gonna die a lot, and a lot of these sc builds are designed to death zerg boss encounters etc. people make builds that can kill uber elder really quick, and they never fail a set, but they might die once or twice even fighting a shaper guardian because their hp is so low theyre in 1 shot range. the hc might struggle more with uber elder because of how long the fight will take with lower damage, but youd never die to something as trivial as a shaper guardian. these are the extremes, theres a middle ground in there where at the top end ur getting maybe 6k life and youve got a bit more damage. i cant tell you whats best for you and im not trying to push a particular build on you, or even style of build, im just giving you a window into some of the possibilities. at the insane end of standard league harvest crafted bonkers mirror tier gear you can do both essentially and have absurd dps and survivability but i wouldnt even humour looking at that sort of thing as it teaches u virtually nothing about how to build a character with your level of items. " stacking block on rangers can be a thing now, but ive not seen it with dodge. the thing with dodge + block, and evasion + dodge had the same problem, its doing the same thing twice. each type of defence mechanic has a strength and a weakness. example: the strength evasion has is thinning out sustained bursts of many small to medium sized hits coming in. its really strong when a lot of trash mobs are attacking you at the same time, it gives you longer gaps between getting hit which gives you time to leech, regen, press a potion etc to recover your life before the next hit lands. the weakness evasion has is that when a big hit gets through you take the full damage, which has the potential to 1 shot you. so if you then take dodge as a mechanic, whats its strengths and weaknesses? theyre exactly the same as evasion, and the same is also true for block. so if you stack all 3 of these defence layers you end up doing the thing they all do REALLY well, but also you have the same weakness you had with 1 of them. a better way to think about using multiple forms of defence is start with 1 of them, work out where its weakness is, and now the second thing you add should try to be strong where the first layer was weak. so evasion, weakness = getting 1 shot by a big hit that gets through. what is strong against surviving 1 big hit? theres 2 things, a large hp pool to survive the hit, or a large damage reduction to reduce the size of the hit. this is why people like spell suppression, its a damage reduction. lots of hp is good, a good layer of every shield, armour, physical damage taken as elemental (like a lightning coil/taste of hate which is what i almost always use on these sort of builds), reduced/less damage taken (like fortify). by all means have a couple of layers that do the same thing, thats fine, but if you want to be really strong have a couple of layers that do 1 thing and then a couple that do something else entirely that fills in the holes in your first set of defences. I love all you people on the forums, we can disagree but still be friends and respect each other :)

Ugh, how do you guys do 5 million dps? I have pretty decent gear and with everything lined up PoB says I do a little bit above 200k dps. I can't see how I'll do 5m even if I only had 3k life :D
I meant to say "evasion + block". I don't know if dodge is still a mechanic in the game now... Currently I have fortify, taste of hate, arctic armour and sometimes endurance charges, so maybe i will only need to beef up the hp & chaos resistance in order to not get 1shot like the day before.
