[3.17] Penance and Friends - 10 mill dps - max block - 2k regen/leech - 9k ci - 10c / SSF

Cool templars don't look at explosions.
They just drop a penance and walk away.




My first guide ever, done in 10 minutes so lower your expectations.
I'm sure someone with better insight on items and crafting can improve this build to way higher dmg, es and overall dmg mitigation.
But for a "vanilla ssf build made by a casual" it's looking pretty good.

New to Poe? Just installed the game this week?
Know the bare basics and want to start this league with a easy and fun build that requires no knowledge of crafting?
Or maybe you do but don't want to play a bow totem meta like everyone else,
and instead look for a SSF viable no stress build you never tried before?

All gear is rare with average t3-t5 mods, nothing special.
Flat es, %es, res, etc. Might take a while to get the right rolls of course,
but basically this build costs nothing.

No cluster jewels, no uniques, no min max, no bullshit.
Just slap on gear and go kill stuff.
Even on a 4L we can hit 9 mill dps (that's what pob said).


If you're looking for a 100 billion immortal dps hype beast, this is not it.
Not actually tested in end game (had no time) but the stats look promising.



*Updated 1.1*
- Fixed arcane surge lvl 10 for more frequent effect.
- Fixed 2 brands per target, max 3.
- Removed enemy lvl.
- Total dps from 15 to 12 mill, still nice.

At 100 we get 9k es, 15 mill dps, 2k leech/regen and max block
(glancing blows, which shouldn't matter since taking dmg is good,
procs more cwdt, and buffs dmg with energy leech support).

Even at 80 we already hit 7500 es with 2k leech/regen and 9 mill dps.


Gameplay?

Just drop penances when needed and keep going.
Hits grant frenzy/power/endurance charges.
Zombies, a golem and purity minions keep onslaught up and take aggro off.
They have some regen but not enough at hard bosses,
so run in and pop a sulphur flask to heal them.



Basically a one button smooth build.
For extra clear you can swap out second wind for vaal arc,
or phase run if you need to go faster/delve/run a lab.

Leveling (SSF and noob friendly)

You'll be playing hybrid life/energy shield(ES)
up to 65-70 till you get enough ES gear to take chaos innoculation(CI).


--- Notes ---

Lab ascendancies:

1) Harmony of purpose (28-34 normal)
2) Radiant crusade (50-55 cruel)
3) Radiant faith (60-66 merciless)
4) Bastion of hope (75+ eternal)


Flasks - Life, 2x quicksilver(4), granite(27), sulphur(34).
Don't overlevel dex required gems.
Gem name (char lvl requirement).


1-16 (act 1-2)

Spoiler
- Freezing pulse(1), arcane surge(1), onslaught(1)
- Flame totem(4), added fire dmg(8), added lightning dmg(8)
- Frostblink(4), elemental proliferation(1)
- Vitality(10) and clarity(10) don't level them up much


Look for flat ele dmg on 2 wands/sceptres, life/mana rings/amu with res.
Get a 24% rustic sash after getting wave of conviction.


Tree: go straight to sovereignty, 15% mana reserve mastery.
Do it by lvl 24, add discipline(24) and drop herald of ash(16) if low mana.



16-28 (act 2-3)

Spoiler
- Wave of conviction(16), arcane surge(1), onslaught(1), fast cast(18)
- Zombies(1), minion speed(18), minion life(18), fast attack(18)
- Flamedash(10) if you prefer it over frostblink
- Add herald of ash(16) and purity(16) for more dmg asap


Look for 4L gear upgrades.
Slap wrath and zealotry in alternative weapon slots to lvl them up.


Tree: grab runebinder at 28 (+1 brand) and the runesmith cluster,
mastery "brands attach to new enemies every 0.3 sec". Say bye to the totem.
Spiritual aid for more dmg and some minion regen.



28-40 (act 3-4)

Spoiler
- Armageddon brand(28), faster casting(18), onslaught(1), combustion(8)
- Add second wind(31) to flame dash
- Add meatshield(31) to zombies
- Add stone golem(34), minion life, fortify(31), feeding frenzy(31)
- Add cast when damage taken(38), wave of conviction, molten shell.
Keep them lvl 1(38) until later 55...60.


Depending on your gear, armageddon brand might be smoother than penance.
Compare and try how each feels.
Do library (act 3) to buy gems from cadiro and get second wind, meatshield.
For penance: innervate(31), energy leech(31), inspiration(31) support gems.

If you got enough mana, you can try using wrath (35%), disc (21%), herald of purity (17%) (total 73% mana reserved) and a low level clarity.
You should be able to run now without mana flasks.
If you can't get a sulphur flask swap wrath for zealotry to gain some consecrated (healing) ground procs.

Upgrade rings/amu/gear with life/res/es/flat life regen


Tree: grab zealot's oath at 34 after getting stone golem.
Get insightfulness cluster with 25% lower discipline reservation.



40-50 (act 5-6)

Kill stuff.

50-60 (act 7-8)

Kill more stuff.

60-70 (act 9-10)

Kill all the stuff.

By now you should be 90 points deep in the tree.
If you managed to find or trade (if you're not SSF) decent ES gear,
you should get above 3000 es and be ready to farm maps from there...

it's interesting but there are some mistake (i think) :
- Your arcane surge lvl 20 link with flame dash
- how do you put 3 Penance brand on 1 target ?
- Why puting enemy lvl at 75 ?

*EDIT*

Just cleared merc lab on my test toon at 67 as ci with low 2200 es (took radiant faith, now 2500 es). 4k unbuffed tooltip dps, 50/65% block.
I got hit a few times down to 10% but still made it so.
Each room took maybe 20 sec.

Random mixed gear on, only 600 total base ES, 200 from disc.
It's amazing for what it is, basically free gear, welfare murder hobo.
(Just don't get hit by izaro you know...)

Overload dont work in brand skills.
What's the use of minion speed with the zombies please ?
EDIT: Also in PoB, Penance Brand energy explosion being at Stage 6 is what we can expect ?

12M dps coming from max stages always but it is setup at 6 on energy explosion, I am not familiar with the way penance brand scales yet, have you got a bit of insight ? Since I would assume max stages = 14 stages but we cannot reach it yet with the basic gear ? I'm a bit confused but damage seems pretty good either way ( so long we reach 6 stages easily ).

Also want to point out that HP for minions seems way too low in my opinion for them to stay alive

Currently doing the acts on league start scenario, has no problem with storm brand since act 1 to act 6 atm ( will keep updated ) ( been trying to use penance brand at various stages and it sucked real hard in all tested scenarios this far. ) ( I suspect the gem level need to be 15+ to start being decent, and a shit ton of cast speed perhaps ? )

Nearing the end of acts and storm brand outshine Penance too much still.

The faster they move and hit, the faster they take aggro off you.
But you can use elemental army ofc to make them tankier. Or fortify.

I can only say it feels good to play.
But how it really works? My best guess is this:

You get enough cast speed/radiant crusade(onslaught) to get the activation time to 0.25 sec. That's 4 hits per sec,
a total 12 energy hits over penances total 3 seclife time.
Even without this much speed you get easy to 0.33 ticks, 9 total energy hits.

So with slow casting stats we get 9 energy
before the explosion for a total 7 mill dps.
With faster casting stats we get 12 energy
hits for a total 10 mill dps (in pob).

Depends what you're doing. I tried some vampiric regen bombardier nemesis mobs and yeah they just one shot my 15k hp golem too.
Broken mobs be broken.

Their job is to do some aggro and give onslaught.
You can switch the 4L to something else, another cwdt frostbomb, cascade coldsnap, blind/curse brand whatever you want. Herald of purity sentinels count as "allies" so them + golem give you onslaught (radiant crusade).
That's why I keep them nearby, always onslaught on, just a qol.

Starting does feel bad, so use armageddon brand till you get better gear, more dmg on the tree, and are lvl 50-60.
Any spell/burn/fire/flat spell dmg buffs armageddon a lot.
Essence slap on wands, hrimsorrow gloves, berek's pass two stone rings lvl 20 add 20-40 cold dmg and cost 1c each, which is insane dmg for fast hitting brands.

Right now I'm 66 with a 5L and over 10k buffed tooltip dps, 0.25 activation speed, meaning 40k total dps + like 8x(stages) 100% more dmg with explosion.
Takes seconds to clear packs, just plowing through.
And using 3 dragons mask for the meme, shocks freeze.

Do you have any video showcase of mapclearen and bossing?
Dont realy get how to get the single target to work? i pumpet some more currency in the build but single target is non existing. Am i doing brand wrong?
