Bone rhoas suck especially if one of those rares spawn with speed aura. When that happens, unless you can deal damage while moving, you're toast as you'll be dodging the charges 99% of the time, and if you get hit, you'll be stunlocked and torn apart.

Had a few close calls and what i learned and best advice i can give you ,if struggling with damage or survivability, is to only activate one nest at a time.

This way you have less aura stacking rares and less incoming damage.
Also a little bit of AOE would help to get rid of weaker trash mobs which are affected by aura effects.

Then why'd they nerf the shit out of explody chests? The reason you spent tons of time or resources to get those was for DD mobs and porcupines. Having an explody chest was a counter to a small subset of mobs that would either be ultra-dangerous without it, or simple with it.

However, they decided to nerf that why? If the point is specific changes to builds covering niche damage sources, why get rid of a thing that covers a niche damage source?

Don't try to analyze and defend their choices. It's literally never going to make sense, and it's just throwing random sized hurdles at us every league, while nerfing every fun build into the dirt, and we either adapt or go play an enjoyable game. But it's never EVER been their direct purpose to balance anything around anything.
