Chaos is the main currency because it's used for map device Zana mods and for crafting (both direct use and bench modifiers); and Exalted is the high-tier currency because it's used for metacrafting.

The status isn't nearly as artificial as them having an innate value, which is directly tied to item power/progression.

You have causality reversed. Chaos was being used as currency by the players before Zana was even in the game. The reason they added costs in chaos was that players already had decided that was the orb of choice for trading.

No, because crafting includes the base use of the item. Back in those days, spamming chaos on items also happened to be the best available crafting method, so it was always about innate use of the item.

I mean, consider the scenario where you get 10k of a crafting item - with 10k fusings, you aren't going to do much once you 6L your chest, and maybe weapon. But with 10k chaos, you can craft pretty good gear for each item slot. That's the innate value of chaos, and why it's the main currency.
Isn't it wonderful that we all have different perceptions of reality?
He's right you know. It's also why chaos was 15:1. Chaos was extremely valuable to chaos spam before crafting.
Git R Dun!
Scour and alch has always been much easier/cheaper to do than chaos reroll. I don't think most people ever waste chaos orbs on rerolling anything.

Hmh, it depends, bc the formula is:

price of Orb of Scouring
+ wasted time by Scour+Alch/Binding instead of Chaos spamming
= price of Chaos Orb

By choosing Scouring instead of Chaos spamming you generally spend less time farming and thereby having less chance of dropping a mirror.

I would even go so far and assume that as long as Scourings are about 2:1c this is still the biggest influence on the price of Chaos Orbs and not Zana mods.

Does anyone know if chaos/exalted orbs will remain the main currency in Path of Exile 2? Not sure if these things are being removed/reworked, etc..

It's the same game.
Path of Exile 2 is the title of a new campaign ,in addition to the old 10 acts, with new ascendancies and revamped gem link system.

Any other changes like visual updates or the changes to the passive tree ,they mentioned at Exilecon, are being implemented during the road to patch 4.0 (aka POE2).

And as we saw recently in 3.16, they indeed implemented a revamped passive tree almost 2 years later.

Masterpiece of 3.16 lore
"A mysterious figure appears out of nowhere, trying to escape from something you can't see. She hands you a rusty-looking device called the Blood Crucible and urges you to implant it into your body."

Only usable with Ethanol Flasks

It's one extra click. Also people are dumb, you can buy 16-20 chance orbs for 1c and vendor exchange them into 4-5 scours, which is like twice as cheap as directly buying scours for chaos. You are spending 1/4 the currency with one extra click to accomplish the same thing.
While on the topic, does anyone know if divines / mirrors will be returning? To be frank I could do without the mirrors..
