The 80 less Maximum ES is a fixed amount. No calculation on any support will ever change that number, because it's not counted as a reservation, and it's not some scaling damage, etc.

Spell damage Supports would only affect the flat damage, which wouldn't be worth the support.
The best ways to support Energy blade is by simply having a LOT of ES, and by having passive increases to lightning damage and spell damage, not by supporting the gem.
There's an issue with this skill... ES itself. You forgot to mention something. Low Life. You CAN run this as a Low life build and get 30% more spell DMG and run Ele Overload.
Look at my pathing on PoB, its extremely hard to take lightning Damage with this skill because it takes away from actually Boosting it in a Defensive way.
Check out how I pathed it. I chose to use Staffs and with Masteries you can have TONS of ES Just from taking Defensive Nodes and Staff nodes.

But I don't know how you plan to survive when the cost to run Energy Blade is 136 multi'd by whatever supports you add to it in addition to basically reserving 80% of your ES - on Low Life.
Petri Blood isn't even going to help you survive that kind of oversight issue.

Pain Attunement and Ele overload won't support it, the staff nodes won't provide bonuses once the staff becomes a sword, and even if everything worked, you plan on using 1.2k life...
Honestly, the only functional ways to support it are empower, enhance and buff effect but you can only get buff effect from a weapon that would be replaced once you press the button. Maybe some Crest of Desire shenanigans...

Turns out the gem scaling sucks, so this isn't really worth it.
You're gonna need to scale ES to get big deeps with this skill.

I have a question regarding this skill. It may be a stupid question, but I'll ask it anyway: Do your weapon (and its affixes) matter at all, as long as it's not a bow? Do I get ANY benefits from not wielding a white weapon?

I'm pretty sure the only thing that carries over from the original weapon is the sockets and gems in them.
