Need clarification on Chaos Mastery

Lose 10% of Life and Energy Shield when you use a Chaos Skill

Sounds pretty straight forward for manually using active skills like ED or Contagion or Toxic Rain.

What about totems? If you have Spell Totem linked to a Chaos skill, does that count? If so, when do you lose 10% life? When the totem gets placed? Do totems lose life also? What about traps or mines? What about triggered skills, like a Chaos slinger or CoC or CwC? Or channeling skills like Blight? Do you lose 10% only on first cast or every time your Mana gets used?

Channeling skills only count as used when you start channeling. So just once.

I would guess the totems take the damage after you place it and you maybe take the hit once on placement but I don’t think so. I don’t think it happened with skills that have a sacrificed life when you place it.

Same with traps and mines.
Thanks for all the fish!

Yes it counts as using chaos skill.

When you summon it, no they don't lose life.

What about traps or mines?
Lose life on throwing.

Triggering is not using.

Already answered by Nubatron.
the real question is CI, will that %life cost immediately delete the character.

also why is there only 2 potential options for a CI chaos dot character(thats assume the +lvl one isnt a suicide button)
It's 10% of 1 life, so assuming you got no life regeneration, you have to use chaos skill 10 times to commit suicide.

still a suicide button if so and a poor design to have a keystone ruin masteries completely for an entire archetype, because of that mastery allows CI suicide in 1 cast(rounded dmg) or 10(no rounding) it means they only get 1 option for chaos mastery as a dot build.

I don't believe this is the case. Summoning a totem is a summoning skill, not a chaos skill. Also, your totem is dealing the damage not you. So no, you shouldn't lose the 10% ES and Life, but your totem will when IT USES the chaos skill. Pair this with Forbidden Rite and your totems going to fire 2 or 3 shots before its gone.

My 2 cents.

Matt.
There are 10 types of people. Those that know binary, and those that dont.

There is metric fuckton of things that dont work together. Its not "poor design". All it means is you just dont take it with CI same way you dont take CI with EB or like you dont roll flask mod that takes your life.
Arcanist Brand Soul Rend might work with it. It already works decently well as single target and for small groups. Althought Trigger spell costs kind of bricked it but might work if you can deal with the mana cost somehow.
