My Big Reddit Post on Diablo 3, Torchlight 2 and Path of Exile
I agree -- the assessment of D3 is fairly much in alignment with my experience, although I'm not sure I'd make any calls quite yet regarding the playtime of a full normal run-through. Is that assuming you skip cut-scenes? Avoid side areas with no real point? Etc, etc.
The assessment of PoE is a bit...okay, it's quite overblown. I want to agree with it all but cannot. Just because I like this particular orange doesn't mean I like it for the same reasons or to the same degree as the OP. The language used, such as 'glorious' and 'take a look at this baby' really does detract from me taking this post seriously. Were you talking about PoE alone, that'd be fine. But once you put the three known contenders for the ARPG crown next to each other (whether or not any of the titles are real contenders is irrelevant), it's best to save the hyperbolic language and just say what is. Let the reader insert the adjectives as they go. OR be hyperbolic about all three. Because D3 has plenty of room for hyperbole, as well we know, and Torchlight 2 isn't immune to gushing either. As it stands, this is a pretty lop-sided piece of writing, but I appreciate the great amount of effort and time that went into it. Wait a few days, though. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.
I am Path of Exile's biggest whale. Period. |

THanks for the posting. Keeping this for later so I can read it!

" Is it?? Is it really?? Cause im fairly certain (from playing for a fair while and seeing it myself) most people running MOC and the highest area of the game use pretty much the same FOTM builds. For all its vast passive tree when you reach extreme levels in POE some very basic core issues with the overall combat mechanics rear their heads and reduce the viable builds and player choice to a tiny pool of abilities and passives. So no sorry your wrong. " No... just no. I like POE a lot, but D2 still holds the crown, its so well balanced, so well considered. Everything works so well, POE is heavily weighted toward certain playstyles, its extremely unbalanced, there are some glaring issues with combat. It seems fine played at low levels but try MOC with anything other than a min/max build and tell me its combat is 'perfected' @ OP: I could mention so much from the OPs post but its bias is outrageous, so much misinformation, so much opinion presented as fact. Sorry review fails if you were looking for UNBIASED... Last edited by RodHull#2035 on May 13, 2012, 8:36:10 PM

That... was quite a bias review you have there.
I'd suggest you to avoid saying things such as "I'd say that X wins out marginally over Y" and instead you should talk about how each game and its features may capture the heart of different demographic groups. Lastly, if you are even semi-serious about this review, you should read up some developers diary and interview/videos such as http://gdcvault.com/play/1015306/The-Art-of-Diablo to understand the reasoning behind the design decisions. |

Biased review is biased. Next.

Kind of an inefficient way to say that you really, really like PoE, isn't it?

Worst "review" I've read in a while.
Try again once you've learned to be objective. “God put me on this earth to accomplish a certain number of things. Right now I'm so far behind that I will never die.”

Hey folks. For those interested, there's a much better post here http://forums.runicgames.com/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=24327 by a fellow PoE beta tester, Brixtan. I just felt it necessary to counter the op's bias with a totally unbiased and fair one. Brix loves D3, PoE AMD Torchlight II and feels the same way I do. The only way to help these games get better is to be as unbiased, fair and critical as we can be, that way we'll hopefully encourage people to see the good in these games despite the bad and get more people to support them.
There's room in this genre for more than one action/rpg. |
