Source? Well, don't have any, except countless "my scarab poofed omg bug" during harvest league.... and every single league after...

It's more than likely it's a bug that hasn't been fixed in so long it became a feature.

Locus of corruption has a chance of destroying the item, and it is written in the text of the mechanic. I don't see why they wouldn't have added it to the text of this harvest mechanic if there was a chance to destroy the scarab when you upgrade it. Also, it seems it only happens with Gilded scarabs but not with Rusted and/or Polished scarabs. so...
