I keep the successful ones. Usually I'll get a character up to 85 or something if that league keeps me interested, then it stays in standard for me to play with.
I play the standard ones if the current league is boring, or I don't feel like it. I like the idea of progress, so playing standard works for me. It is good to have multiple 90+ characters to experiment with every patch reset. |

Use them to test.
Use them to have fun. Use them to theory craft. Use currency to practice craft items. Have fun. (سಥ益ಥ)س (سಥ益ಥ)س (سಥ益ಥ)س (سಥ益ಥ)س (سಥ益ಥ)س (سಥ益ಥ)س (سಥ益ಥ)س

I keep them for future play on Standard. Very rarely, I recycle a character name for re-use, but for the most part, I grow my stable of characters. =^[.]^=

Impressed at how many folks here are consistent!
I honestly just do whatever. About half I've just not logged in on since, some have been deleted either because I wanted the name or I'd run out of slots, and others still I've messed around on for one reason or another (e.g. trying out a skill to see if I like it before a league starts). Delete, standard is boring.

Filter them out. Every year or so I delete a bunch.

Keep the higher level ones around for testing, one or two to craft/grind between leagues, most of the others get pulled apart for the shiny bits inside. I have a couple friends who only play once in a while (so um, standard.) and need that one familiar dork to acclimate themselves to stuff before wading in to a new puddle of nerfs.
It's just very nice to have a blank 96+ marauder or shadow to test how a drastically new setup will feel. Like it or not, if PoB math were the only things that mattered, most people actually would only play 1 or 2 builds, they're not stupid. But if it feels super clunky or gives me carpal tunnel, I won't play it. Hence the actual road test. A feelbad league or build gets left behind.
