What is PoE to you?

Confession: I have never read most of the game story content.

I blast through this game and slay monsties. That is all this game has ever been to me and all that any game like this has ever been to me. I enjoy the atmosphere, the skills, the art, the sounds, the loot, and the mechanics. I haven't enjoyed a story in a video game since Dungeon Siege 2.

My mind knows it is doing the same thing over and over again and so it relishes in the thrill of being a powerful hero with awesome graphical powers, tearing through those who oppose me. Then, I get "rich" off of their loot and make my character stronger.

It is I who chooses to be the God-king of creation or the Devil-king of destruction!

Very insightful.

Well, honestly, what more could one ask for? I play a video game and have fun.
Ive started with awakening league (if i remember correctly).

Since then PoE was always the fastest paced ARPG with most freedom on the market.

Maybe thats about to change, we will see :)

Thanks for this post, I will take the title to respond...

POE was for me... an alternative to D3 first, a new adventure when I started, lots of chances to do different builds with that bast amount of passives to select and all the options of weapons, armors, links on skills to change the skill with suport gems...

At first was a really good adventure to explore and discover stuff, learn a lot the mechanics of the game, cost me lots to find maps and discover what that was, when I discovered I was able to put an alch orb on a map and BOOM a white mas had lots of things now! awesome...

I started since last month of Delve then, im one of that people who started on the "zoom zoom era" or whatever that was, just after the "you dont have phones?" issue, then... what was POE for me was, dreaming somehow, dreaming about make my own builds but try the ones that other people did first to learn, and dream again, dream with the moment that I was enough "stronk" to make my own stuff and...
"oh! look! that new skill looks like that character from anime if I use that other support gem! maybe I do a build that replicate character from anime"

Yes, that was POE for me, dream about what maybe I was able to do on future after learn enough and test enough builds and someday kill lots of monsters with that, feeling powerful hehe.

Was also the trade like D2, good but old, not bad but not perfect, a good point but dont mind having AH someday.

POE for me was a game to create a character to my taste because... for sure will be possible with all that options and combinations, right?...

right? T.T
Full Harvest is besto waifu, give me 3.11 and/or 3.13 and take my money.

what is PoE to you and do you feel it is working or not working for how you play[/b]?

Examples:

1. End game Meta efficiency: Maps and uber bosses. Use of most efficient builds borrowing from streamers.

2. Almost wholly maps, some trade for gear.

3. Path of Building! Gameplay just testing.

4. Solo play through story content, recreating new chars. Maybe some twinking, but mostly ssf.

5. Hardcore only, push as fast and far as possible

6. Conquering additional game modes: labs, delves, new league mechanics

7. Speed levelling and challenges

For me, it's whatever I find fun at the time.

I mostly do #3 then #4, followed up by #2 if I enjoy my build (though rarely trade due to SSF). I do #6 along the way, and occasionally #7 or even #5.

If I had to describe what the game is to me:

PoE is a complex, hardcore ARPG, that I enjoy because I have to plan my build, employ tactics as I progress, and see what comes of it through drops and the content ahead of me. I try to play quickly, but I don't enjoy clearing screens of mobs in SSF without having to think hard or sink many dozens of hours into the same build. The most fun I have is planning a build, then seeing how it plays against the content, and adjust accordingly.
I take an idea and I ride it until I'm bored in SSF HC.

The goal is always to make it work to the best of its ability under the given circumstances. Going SSF means making the best of what I have access to and going HC provides the exhilaration that makes the gameplay attractive.

I dislike Chris's stance on the logout macro as I'd much prefer a timer on the logout button. I die frequently every league because I tinker with the build trying things to shape the build into something that works in HC.

I realize not many people enjoy the game like I do.

You have to remember that you're talking to people whose identity and self-worth are centered around playing video games. That sentence can't even go in their heads.

Only a game? Fun?

Error...error...check information...check information...

Ah of course games are only fun or not, for everyone. No complexity, just yes or no. Again, very insightful.

Maybe just don't comment if adding nothing but pointless statements, or is it just too important that people see how cleverly snarky you are?

For me POE died when Chris sold his "vision" to Tencent. It is nothing more than a cash grab for MTX and mystery boxes. Sad but true! I am still trying the leagues but stream priorities, constant lags/disconnects, uninteresting league mechanics and no QOL features made this game a bad experience for me.

Can cosmetics ever be considered a cash grab?

I'd say if anything the increasing need for stash tabs is the cash grab, and that's subjective.
