What do you mean by "spam the heck out of Alts"? Sorry, but english is not my mothertongue, I really don't understand it.

Spam = do the same thing a lot of times.

The usefulness of Alterations is that you can try to target a specific modifier. Suppose you want 170-179% increased physical damage on a weapon. One Alteration won't help you get it... but if you use 6,000 alterations* you will have a pretty decent shot at getting 170-179% increased physical damage (or something comparably rare and valuable) at least once.

*craftofexile.com shows average 2,886 Alteration + Augmentation to get 170-179% phys at least once, but it is still a matter of luck and some people can get unlucky.

EDIT: For SSF, I probably would not use Alterations unless you are doing Flasks for movement speed (anti-bleeding, anti-freeze, anti-curse, anti-burning, anti-poison can all be beastcrafted in the Menagerie using Bestiary captured beasts), or rolling Watchstones:

Using Alterations for use-cases like mentioned above (170-179% phys) in SSF would probably only be for someone who plays A LOT and very efficiently in SSF.

Thanks a lot! Since I don't play SSF and normally don't have enough currency to craft anything, the only two use cases for me to spam anything have been creating a six socket and creating a six link. At least now I understand why Alterations may be more valuable than I thought :-)
