If you are one of those luckers who already grinded several exalts, then you can afford to craft a little, but it will always be cheaper to go shopping.
If you take a look at my rare items, you could see how far you could get with very low currency and I like to find my gear. But every league there are some build enabling items I better buy then have long journey to grind it. You could get far with very cheap trades.
In Ulti league I am at 4 ex at level 91. This means I will never use those for slamming exs.
Would be different if I would have hundreds of them. But this is PoE not the other game.

That statement must be untrue given that there are people who craft for profit.

Both can be true.

I want to craft a Large Cluster Jewel for myself (personal use) with notables X, Y, and Z. It will always be cheaper to buy than craft.

However - if I don't want a specific combination I can still craft jewels for profit because a given large cluster can have 30 permutations worth 30c and 3 permutations worth 3ex - I just have to know what is valuable and stop when I hit one and start over on a new base that costs 10-15c.

In the personal use case, 32 of those 33 'valuable' permutations are useless to me and I roll over them, making it much cheaper to have bought at market value.

Guess we don't need any profession then. Why not make your own vaccines?

It's always been cheaper to buy mid-game items than craft for yourself. High end-game items suffer from market inefficiencies because there aren't enough players with the know-how, high capital investment, risk appetite, and quest progress required to reach market equilibrium EDIT: compared to the market of buyers available. As a result, you get oligopoly-like pricing, where you can in fact pull a profit.

That said...

Is this really considered midgame now? To me this just reads, "hi i'm just starting to break into maps, need a 6W 6L two-hander to start playing, nothing too fancy, just need 1000+ DPS and at least 7% crit, I don't need 9% crit nor 1100 DPS"

If you are considering how's current game is moving forward, you just need a tons of DPS, resist and layers of defense before you can your early yellow to red maps (mid game). Or else, you EXP bar will just bounce forward and backward repeatedly.

Now, 1m DPS is laughable, 10m DPS is the Ok one and 25m+ is what they call a viable build to do all content.

Getting an item with 4-5 good T2-T1 rolls will fall into a good tier (but not Godly). And this items can be upgraded later.

If you just want to insert a sarcasm on the comment which is actually not the case, then you should see a psychologist or wear a tin-foil hat.

The "To me this just reads..." comment is laughable. And yes that reads ONLY TO YOU~

The very basic ones falls around 3-5ex which is quite affordable.
But the ones I like to craft is a whooping 45-50ex :D

By luck and time investment, I can probably craft 0-1 item on my own before the league ends.
Yeah, lot of people are so 'oh the power creep is too much, nerfs are good', yet they ignore the fact that all the mobs and bosses have been significantly buffed over the last couple of leagues.

So much so that, as was rightfully said, you can forget about playing end-game content with just couple of ex and < 10mil DPS .

The game is SO heavily tuned to streamers and 'no-lifers', that it's ridiculous the amount of time you must spend on maps, to generate enough currency to get builds to end-game. ( End-game here considered to be A8 Sirus / T16 juiced maps / Maven and similar bosses / etc )
