This thread explain a lot of things for me

Thanks for bumping this old thread, I probably would have otherwise never come across it. Interesting to learn a little history about how Path of Exile was named.

When i first heard the name "Path of Exile", I thought of the Magic the Gathering Conflux card.

When speaking to other people about this game I frequently call it Path to Exile due to all my time playing magic and using this particular card:

Other than that constant slip up on my part, I really enjoy the game and its name. Its cool to know that Wraeclast is also basically the name of the game. Your #1 fansite better figure out a way to get that domain name quick ;)

Interestingly: www.pathTOexile.com redirects to www.pathOFexile.com

I'm curious how the name for the client came about... for some users it's labeled as:

Dragon: MMORPG

(especially when it's pretty vehemently defended as not being an MMORPG)

wat? really? mine says "Client" in the top left.

This is an Nvidia thing. It's possible that it's pulling a list of game executable fingerprints and giving it the wrong label... which is what I am now under the impression is happening for those users.

Normally I'm not a big fan of a time capsule being opened. But this was a good read, and I didn't even know some of this stuff.

Indeed, I am a fan of both Poes ^^

"[...] 'nearly napping, suddenly there came a tapping [...] And so faintly, you came tapping, tapping at my chamber door,' [...] Be that my bounty from my beta pack at my chamber door? Fie for shame, 'tis lame, ''tis some visitor'[...] and nothing more!'"

Hehe, yes, I love Edgar Allan Poe. Yes, I know... a few words derived form vernaculars of different times betwixt the lines, but I have a fetish for words, and I like to put them in vulnerable positions!

1) One With Nothing. This name does kind of indicate being exiled with nothing to your name, and we kind of liked the sound of it but the main negative is that its kind of complicated. The .com was (and is) available. Another reason people liked it is because of the abbreviation to OWN. You could even come up with an expansion with some name like Eternal Destiny ( very bad example) to get OWN:ED. In retrospect this seems stupid.

2) Dark Shore. I really liked this one. At the time I think the domain was in a lapsed state so we could have picked it up. Chris disliked it because it implied that the entire game revolved around a shoreline rather than this just being the beginning. I think there was also a WoW area called that too, which was also a negative.

Anyway, we settled on Path of Exile, the domain was available, it describes fairly exactly the starting state of the plot, and its also an english idiom (though not used very often). It has the added bonus of there being a word in Old English, Wraeclast that means "Path of Exile" which sounds quite cool as a continent name.

POE, its always good to have a 3 letter version, more or less doesnt seem to work for me ;-)

Yea, now that I think about it, you can remember the name really easily, which is amazingly powerful on player return numbers.
