Hello!
Just reacently found this game and I must say: this game looks great! Let me first tell about myself so my idea doesn't sound like a silly idea coming from no one. I work for marketing office and I am freelance graphics designer/coder and I make game for hobby when I got time for it. So my idea is very simple... Change the obvious/self explanatory name to just Exile. It's easier to market. Last bumped on Jul 30, 2017, 8:18:33 AM

Exile is totally a name for the game that we considered. Unfortunately there are a few problems with it:
1) We wanted to be able to get the .com domain for our game. www.exile.com is taken. Even www.exilegame.com is taken. 2) There are already other games called Exile which would add confusion. The most popular being this http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Myst_III:_Exile, but there is also this series http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exile_(video_game_series). We spent a *long* time trying to come up with good names. It was seriously a year and a half into development before we settled on a name. Other random names that we considered: 1) One With Nothing. This name does kind of indicate being exiled with nothing to your name, and we kind of liked the sound of it but the main negative is that its kind of complicated. The .com was (and is) available. Another reason people liked it is because of the abbreviation to OWN. You could even come up with an expansion with some name like Eternal Destiny ( very bad example) to get OWN:ED. In retrospect this seems stupid. 2) Dark Shore. I really liked this one. At the time I think the domain was in a lapsed state so we could have picked it up. Chris disliked it because it implied that the entire game revolved around a shoreline rather than this just being the beginning. I think there was also a WoW area called that too, which was also a negative. 3) There were a bunch of names we were trying out with the name Crimson in the title. Suggestions like Crimson Shore, and even just Crimson came up. We have a whole list somewhere of potential names, most of which are crap that could be dug up, but there you go. Anyway, we settled on Path of Exile, the domain was available, it describes fairly exactly the starting state of the plot, and its also an english idiom (though not used very often). It has the added bonus of there being a word in Old English, Wraeclast that means "Path of Exile" which sounds quite cool as a continent name. Path of Exile II - Game Director

Thanks for the answers! Didn't expect that many reasons being behind the name selection. I still have idea that could help marketing. Instead of chaning the name of Path of Exile it could "advertised" as Exile and some search engine optimisations later the game could come on top with just the word Exile or Exile game etc...
Names with great acronyms are always good and thats why One With Nothing is good even tho its in a same way self explanatory as Path of Exile. I know how hard selecting a name for a game can be. For me to come up with name for my game project called Damned took a damned long time. :P Are you guys still open for name ideas or is this one locked? So I or we(forum members) know if we should waste our awesome brain energy on this. :) |

Interesting stuff.
I imagine the name is locked at this point. Changing it would require a lot of effort and confusion. Forum Sheriff

i prefer path of exile anyway , do not care to see it changed . american amish and quakers still use the 'path of exile' . there is most likely an old dutch word for it also . exile is used when shunning/imprisonment/extra labor is not considered balance for the crime . --- .

" When it comes to design and marketing, the name is crucial. The name Path of Exile is perfectly fine considering the already established competition and now you own rights to a registered domain which corresponds exactly with the game's actual name. The hardest part in any business foundation is name and logo. Once you have decided, that is half the battle. I've spent many nights creating websites for companies that have irrelevant business names regarding their niche market. |

Same here, but the problem with Path of Exile name is that its very easily forgotten. I just forgot it again and had to ask my girlfriend and she was sure she would remember it... but guess what, she didn't remember!

I, personally, like the name - it has a very dark ring to it and to my opinion it's quite memorable.
