How much can you trust POB(fork) ?
I'm wondering how much you can trust POB (cm fork) in terms of damage calculations.
If POB says it's higher damage to drop from 66% to 22% pen in favor of some other gem/stat (and target is Sirius as example). Do you just trust that outright? or are there certain things involving bosses, penetration and such that you should be aware that maybe POB doesn't calc correctly or would you say its safe to trust POB's dps calculation always? (provided you've configured pob correctly of course, but for penetration as example, I believe it's automatically detected by pob and not needed to be specified in the config) Last bumped on Feb 25, 2021, 6:30:08 PM

Depends on what you want to know. The fork is reliable if you want to compare simple damage stats, i.e different gems and comparing different mechanics for damage scaling. So when it comes to penetration vs other stats then i'd say it's reliable.
Where you can't trust it is when it comes to comparing DPS from different skills and generally when it comes to skills/builds that are more than just "stand there and hit face". Examples are bleed, warcry based slams and some others where just using average damage per second as a metric can be missleading as to how good the performance is going to be. PoB is usually correct, it'll give you the wrong information if you tick the wrong boxes but if your usage is correct it usually is too.
In the case of Sirus and pen in general its value is highest when the enemy has high resist and lower the less they have. If an enemy has 0% resist Pen is just a lower value more multiplier than most other gems. |

" The numbers on PoE Are 99% of the times right. But sometimes number and reality are a different thing. Like if you check BB/BF DPS it will just multiply number of blade by average hit by cast rate Or in reality you can never cast both bladefall and bladeblast at max cast speed so here only the average hit is interesting in itself. And hard to compare to other spells. To vanquish without perils is to triumph without glory.

I see guys, ty for your replies :) very interesting too, since POB is a tool a lot of us heavily use.
" I'm just surprised that POB says I'm better off dropping lightning pen gem for controlled destruction, even if it puts me at only 22% penetration vs bosses:) I thought bosses had around 40-60 res if not more, but well according to pob, i'd gain 100k dps extra per average hit by swapping gems. (for lightning trap, there's just an average hit number, it doesn't say anything about total dps) Then again, i'm at 2mil avg hit and usually when I run this setup with lightning pen, i'm only at around 500k'ish avg hit, so I guess I'm at a point where simply with this high amount of dmg, the pen has lost some value. If I reload my older POB's with ca. 500k'ish avg dmg, it still says pen is the best choice. Funny thing is, I almost feel like i'm downing shaper faster with the less damage setup of lightning pen gem rather than c. destruction, but it may just be in my mind tbh, either way its super hard to differentiate. If you have Wave of Conviction and exposure type set to Lightning, it will tell you that Controlled Destruction is better than Lightning Pen. This is because anymore exposure and penetration you put into the build, it starts to behave more like an "increased" rather than "more" multiplier. It's just like how Flicker Strike builds already have too much attacks per second so adding more into it only gives you diminishing returns, compared to adding more flat damage to double its damage per hit, which will straight up double the DPS.
But remember this is based on the condition that you WILL use Wave of Conviction on the boss. If you don't, then Lightning Pen is better. Last edited by jeerinho#7997 on Feb 24, 2021, 1:21:42 AM

" Ahh-ha, that's why it changed in pob then, excellent:) I didn't know that's how pen worked, with the diminishing, so now it makes a lot more sense since wave was something I threw in recently to test. Thx for the reply :) |

As a general rule of thumb, the more you have of something, the less effect you will get of getting more of it. If you already have several means of reducing enemy resists like pen, exposure etc then adding more won't have much merit. Same for any other stat.

Everyone forgets, that damage reduction for 14sec was bolted on every notable boss, back when bosses got hp buff. So that damage in pob is only correct from 15th second onwards.
