Internet Connection Issues

For the past 2 leagues now my game has been having desync issues, somehow related to my internet connection. Ever since I moved, and had to play using Wifi instead of a wired connection. The desyncs don't always happen. They tend to be at specific times of the day, but sometimes I'll go a couple weeks without any issues.

I've done a lot of troubleshooting of my own, and nothing really helps. While the issue is clearly linked to my internet connection, this game is the only service I use that acts as such. Other games, streaming websites, and file downloads all work properly through my internet connection.

Using in game features to report this bug doesn't seem to be of any help, since if I try to get a bug report number, I'll either crash before I can obtain it, or stop desyncing when I do.

I've been typing this while I was desyncing, and it seems like just now the game caught up. it often starts desyncing when I interact with an NPC or a stash. Interacting with those again sometimes helps the game catch up. /oos is of no use at all. While out of sync, the mini map and terrain loads, but not NPCs or enemies. Fram time and FPS graphs act normally, while the latency one flatlines.

It's inconsistent enough to make me believe the game is fine, yet from time to time I just won't be able to complete a map because it'll desync every time I encounter new enemies.

Any help troubleshooting/fixing this would be appreciated.

The issue you are describing does sound like a wireless internet connection issue. Unfortunately we often find that players who are using wireless internet connections often encounter disconnection and latency issues.

The solution to such issues is usually to use a wired internet connection. If you aren't able to do that, the assistance we can offer may be a bit more limited.

To begin with, I would suggest that you ensure that you are using Predictive Networking Mode. You can change this setting within the UI Options while within the login or character selection screen. I would also recommend that you power-cycle your router as well.

the problem with a WiFi connection is that it tends to be unstable = latency going up and down all the time + packet loss also happens.
These are 2 things that the PoE client isn't happy about.
If you compare this to a streaming app, then these app's normaly cache the video ahead of what you are seeing on your screen and this helps them deal with latency spikes or packet loss. That is something you can't do in a game like PoE.

With WiFi many "external" things can interfer with the signal like radio channel conflicts (like your neighbor having his own WiFi but on the same channel as you), noise from like a Microwave and things like this.
Thanks for the reply. Video/streaming may not have been the best example, but no other games have been giving me similar issues.

Sure my connection might be unstable, but how does a 10ms lag spike make the game desync for 30 seconds to 5 minutes at a time?

I legit don't recieve any server side information for insane amounts of time, then either get disconnected or I rubberband to catch up to everything that's happened since.

I have often reset, power cycled, or otherwise turned my router/modem off and on. I have ran multiple download tests/ ping tests to see if there is any major difference in my internet connection during the day (where the game runs fine) and night (where this occurs). I have tried Vulkan, I have tried DirectX11.

The situations I have described in the post happen that way when I play on predictive. If I play in lockstep instead, the game just fully freezes, and fully rubberbands back up to speed after said 30 seconds to 5 minutes. Sure predictive lets me "play", but without recieving any info from the server, that means I can't interact with anything, monsters don't load, buffs don't reapply, damage isn't being dealt, etc.

I have tried port forwarding, I have tried using both the 32 bit launcher and the 64 bit launcher. I have tried switching from my 5Ghz connection to my 2.4Ghz one, which is supposed to be slower but more stable. Different problem happens there : I move 1 screen, I get TP'd 3/4ths of a screen back, 2 steps away from where I started out. This jitters back and forth, with my performance graphs jumping all over the place constantly.

Using a wired connection is not currently an option.

yeah then I don't think you will be able to play PoE until you get a wired connection.

Again a WinMTR report while you are playing would clearly so the connection problems.....

per forum guidelines then make your own thread.
This thread is for @Kotaff001

Also WinMTR reports needs to run against correct instance IP's while you are playing in them and not only the PoE login server.
@Depox

Hey there,

Like HanSoloDK mentioned, it's really helpful to create a separate thread for these issues, as we can review and diagnose on a case-by-case basis and gather information. :) If you would like us to assist you, our team would greatly appreciate it!

Otherwise, I did take a quick peek. While we normally do prefer using certain routes, I am noticing some packet loss on the way to our servers. This may be worth looking into, and we would be happy to help with this if you'd like.

@Kotaff001

:) The WinMTR can help us understand a little bit about what's happening when you are connecting to our servers. If you can provide one and put it in a Pastebin, we would greatly appreciate it! You can find a guide to doing the test here: https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1377789

Please ensure that you are using the latest version of the software (version 0.92, not version 0.8).

Please make sure to run WinMTR while you are experiencing issues in-game, as this will provide us with the most accurate data. Also, please ensure that you run the WinMTR for 300-500 packets (about 5-8 minutes) so that we can get a full picture of what is happening.

Please also confirm for us which host address was used for the report.

Finally, once you have these details, please place them into a Paste Bin, or if you would like to put them into a spoiler, that would work as well.
Allright well I ran some tests using WinMTR like you mentioned here are the results :

https://pastebin.com/z23GjVpM - First attempt, a bit short. I only tested while the game was lagging/freezing/whatever.

https://pastebin.com/n4jqPxEB - Here's a 300+ packet test, with only a slight lag happening between packets 183 and 218.

https://pastebin.com/aiR40xvC - This is my most accurate test. This one was done 100% while lagging. (same situation as before : I can move my character, but monsters, interactable stuff, buffs, none of these update at all).

https://pastebin.com/0yZ4mqsS - Probably not as interesting, but just for fun I let that other test run for as long as the game was lagging. So it took 900+ packets for the game to crash (crash to login screen).

Edit : https://pastebin.com/tnmTn1mh Here's a WinMTR report from just now 9early in the day). I didn't lag during this time, and I thought it'd be a good comparison.
