Character level and location not showing to steam friends

Just to note, if you are not playing via the Steam game client your character/activity will not be displayed on your Steam friends list.

Additionally, I have been looking into this and have been able to play via the Steam game client with my character information displayed via the Steam overlay & the friends' list - are you saying you cannot see a friends' information when they are playing via the Steam game client?
