Are templars bad, or am I bad?

AoF is already getting removed and tweaked come 0.9.9 on May 8th.

There are a billion ways to make your class, just explore the tree, explore your skills, explore what you like to play and after a couple of lv 30's the answers will start coming to you automatically.

I've designed all my own classes, albeit not always original not that I got the idea from someone else, rather that the idea for the class has been around.

Like my Dual Wand Ranger (Machine Gun)
or my Flicker 2H Ranger
or my favorite Sceptre Lightning Templar (ZEUS!)

I won't say I'm a templar expert, but mine has been very effective with this build:

Uses scepters and Molten Shell, Discharge, and Ice Nova, along with elemental melee attacks situationally.
You can go quasi-AoF by comboing some elemental damage sources: If you take Lightning Strike supported with Added Fire Damage and Hatred you'll get some decent-scaling tri-element weapon damage on your character that scales with your weapon and is boosted by your rather large weapon elemental damage passives. There would still be a good chunk of physical damage involved that isn't getting that boost that AoF would grant, but AoF is so strong anyway that I'm sure in its absence it would perform well enough.
I would say go for Catalyze and elemental damage near templar. Build up staff damage/ias/block and the passive life leech nodes. Also, I would recommend getting resolute and bulk up on the physical damage with 2 hand/defense/life nodes near Marauder. My current templar staff does 12k ground slam/18k flicker strike without crit flasks.

For early on skill I would use sweep until Ruthless and then mainly use flicker (which is redic) for rare monsters and then ground slam for the mass mobs.

Staff is a pretty straight forward build, I think you may need to learn how to kite more which is what this build is all about using ground slam.
You must be doing something wrong. Templars are no hard, to play, at all.

For a staff Templar try using a build similar to this one:
Passive skill tree build

I have a lvl 46 Templar in Legacy League that uses a build much like this one.

Also try using appropriate gear, ditch the outdated stuff. And don't be afraid to use some spells, and some summons here and there, especially early on.

Good luck, and have fun.
Honestly, if you nerf Aof, then I do have serious concerns about Templars. Their section of the tree is weaker in my opinion.
I disagree, think templars are very powerful, they have more varied and better options than marauders but at the same time more focused weapon passives. Marauders will typically pick one type of weapon, once you've chosen a good 20% of marauder passives become useless for you. Templars dont have that issue nearly as much imo

My templar on 0.9.9 alpha is working quite well without AoF, and he's a true hybrid templar. He uses both spells and weapon skills and uses str/int weapons and armor that were designed for the templar. He also has no keystone passives.

So, have no fear of templar being nerfed to the dirt by losing a single keystone. There are plenty of other ways to play the class effectively :)
Closed Beta/Alpha Tester back after a 10-year hiatus.
First in the credits!

That's exactly how I built my Templar. He's my first char, and it just seemed the most natural way to go about playing him. I use one-hand maces, shields, plate armor and generally play him as a tanky caster. I also have loads of strength for the few attack skills I use. It just seems extremely versatile. I haven't even died yet. Swept right through Act 1-2 solo on normal difficulty. Gonna' see how I fare on higher difficulties.

Nonsense, I didn't touch AoF and I find it very viable.
Nothing to see here.
