" That's fine for dark fantasy. Also death of a pet is more realistic for people than some villain's mass human experiments in Lunaris Temple, hence the reaction. You also didn't knew any of those people during the plot, guess if someone like Hargan would be killed by Piety, it would cause more reactions. I certainly remember people not being happy about what happened to Nessa. This is classic for the fiction. The reader would care about single named character with a story more than about thousand who died off-screen. I only have problems with WW2-inspired designs for Templars, and for different reason: this feels too much disconnected from the image of the Templars from Act1-4. Voll was stupid, for sure, but not "fantasy nazi". Geoffri wasn't evil as well, and the side of purity in the Act1-4 feels much more on the "good" side than Malachai's. And to more of that, Act5+ implies that the Templar were always "evil" like that, while IMO it would feel much more organic to just say that it was Dominus' quest for power and corruption caused by him. I just wish they would not ruin PoE2 by turning it into another heroic fantasy, everyone would have Diablo 4 for that purpose anyway. |

I try to avoid the bad stuff, which likely would do that for lack of genuinely original and stimulating content. That's not fine. Not at all. And while it is typical of fiction for the reader/watcher to connect with the few over the many (thanks Spock), I've not been given any indication that the 'many' here are all that backgrounded or that the 'few' are all that foregrounded. Seems a strange moment for PoE to pivot from almost numbingly grotesque at every turn to intimately moving, but I suppose if you know the backstory re: the real cat, there's some connection there. If. Either way, agreed regarding heroic narrative. It was almost irresponsible of GGG to 180 there with the Exile. Almost -- they still kept the Exile perpendicular to any sort of genuine heroism by tying every accidental act of goodness to personal gain. At least until the clusterfuck that is the Atlas. I never really bothered with that. After it stopped being about Wraeclast, I considered it extraneous, even if at some point there's a half-hearted attempt at threatening Oriath from beyond the planes. Anyway, digression. As for PoE '2', it starts with a botched hanging which strikes me as a little more sympathetic than just being dumped off a prison ship, but we'll see. If I like a game, it'll either be amazing later or awful forever. There's no in-between.

" One thing we should probably keep in mind is that the templar nazi imagery isn't an established symbol of evil in PoE world. For your average Oriath citizen templars are those that apprehend/judge criminals, serve the god of light, keep the slaves in line and wear incredibly snappy Hugo Boss outfits, so, they're the good guys unless you're wrongly accused or a slave. At no point in PoE history did the whole world go to war with the templars, won and designated their regalia as a symbol of ultimate evil. So, my beef with this choice is that the imagery they used invokes more feelings in us than your average joe in the world of PoE, and for entirely different reasons. Wish the armchair developers would go back to developing armchairs.

" Yes, you're right. But that specific symbolism is so infamous in the real history, so using of resembling symbolism in fictional setting is an equivalent of saying "those characters are 100% evil". For us, the reader, not for the characters inside of the story. The locations like Slave Pens or Control Chamber in Act 5 just amplifies that feeling, setting the Templars as complete monsters. And the problem is that hard to see Victario or Geoffri coming from the place like that. Why would Victario have any problems with Malachai's experimentations if Templars themselves did the same if not worse (at least, the Gemlings were consent with experimentations, IIRC)? It could be explained by the Dominus' corruption, the Templars become like that under Dominus, because he need test subjects for his search of godhood, and he just used the ideas of purity to achieve his own goal. However, as we see, Innocence (God) had no problems with current state of Oriath, instead of being displeased of Dominus and his methods, so it implies that the Templars were always like that. It feels like Act1-4 and Act5-10 are just different disconnected stories. |
