I agree. It doesn't feel as good as Divine Ire as an example.
CL isn't even close to SST lol but really it comes down to its a channel that isn't channeling

its viable, just you have to be pretty OP to actually beat out Arc

Edit: to add a little more the game doesn't really reward channeling skills, Standing still has an extremely high cost in PoE and only a few of the channeling skills have the power to justify them.

DI is the best I think but just look at the construction of that as a skill, it charges up faster the more stuffs around you, its charge up actually kills 95% of enemies anyway then the beam itself hits like a cannon.

Every other channel is lacking something in comparison, CL is lacking the channeling tag as well as something lol though if it was channeling you couldn't use spell echo etc so maybe not great.

That's a good analysis of CL vis a vis channeling skills.

I really want to try CL as a second character this league but all this negativity is giving me pause. I have my ideas on how to build it, which is not at all the way the community at large is trying it, but if its bugged I don't want to waste my time -_-
Personally, I found crackling lance really awkward for clear. With low/no intensity, it straight up misses enemies all the time with its strange hitbox I can't quite figure out. As soon as you get intensity its clear potential vanishes and it's single-target only.

Seems like it's great for single target when combined with stuff like arcane cloak and sigil of power, or other buffs.

I attempted to run it with archmage but it was way too difficult to sustain (yes, yes, archmage is only for duration skills like storm brand and orb of storms. I found this out the hard way).

From what I've read, the best way to use crackling lance is stack tons of cast speed, so you can fire the laser very quickly even when you have more intensity than you'd prefer for clear.

In general I'm disappointed with most of the new/reworked skills this league. This topic isn't about firestorm and icestorm but boy are those mediocre now - stacking storms was THE way to stack damage and screen coverage, and now that you can't there's just no point.

Yeah GGG has learned from the past mistakes not to make new stuff overpowered. The result is none of these new/reworked skills have been found to be worth crowning as meta.

On one hand, we want to try them out for new experience. But as you get to above mid-80s level, you start questioning yourself why you still want to grind to finish the build knowing there are other skills out there that clearly outperforms it.

Pretty soon these skills are going to be forgotten just like Stormbind.

Slightly off topic: Frost Shield crit bonus being limited to spells? I want to ask whyyyy??? Void Sphere 10 secs cooldown! Punishment only helps when monster is already close to dying... OMG...

I think this skill was designed with Templar + Unique helms in mind such as
and others. You just sit there and tank and let the juice fly vs bosses that's my quick fast and dirty take
