How do I stop constant downloads?

Hello

I've been trying to play PoE through Steam but every few days, it tells me I can't play because there's a patch I need to download. It then takes 5-6 days to download the patch, even if I leave my PC on all night. The game runs fine for two days, then it's another 5-6 days to download the next patch. I don't want this. I want a game that I can play without having to wait. Is there any way around this?

I heard that one needs to install the 'standalone client', whatever that is. I followed the instructions on some other website and it seemed to install, but now wants to download 27GB. Which is the problem, not the solution. If I let it do that, will it then be fixed? Or will it want to download another 27GB every few days, like Steam does?

As you have guessed, I'm not very computer-literate so I might be doing something wrong. But every other game I play through Steam seems to work OK. It's just this one that gives problems. Thanks in advance for any help.

By way of further explanation, the game is already installed on my hard drive. Or the cloud or wherever things are installed these days. So I guess my question is if there's any way I can play the game that is already installed without having to download 33GB from Steam or 27GB from the 'standalone client'. I'm not understanding why I need to download a full game that I already have on my PC.
no.
OK, thanks for the confirmation, I feared that may be the case. I'm not going to keep downloading huge files regularly so I'll rather uninstall the game.

you must have a local problem, since the stand-alone client is very simple and NEVER do a full download unless your files have become corrupted (check this with packcheck).
Regarding steam client, then this is a steam issue and not so much a GGG issue.
Thank you for the help and suggestions, I managed to find Packcheck and ran it. It reported that a whole bunch of files weren't synced but that it repaired them. I assume that's from the Steam update being paused/stopped halfway through, as the game was playing fine before the patch and nothing seemed corrupted.

Anyway, I uninstalled the game entirely from Steam and will now do a clean install from the standalone client. Hopefully that resolves the issue of the entire game having to be re-downloaded every time there's a 2MB patch. It means I'll lose nearly a week waiting for the download, which is time I'd rather have spent in-game, but it is what it is. Thanks again for your help.

out of curiosity why is it taking so long for your downloads? or are being metaphorical in the time.

also steam doesn't redownload massive amounts of data, it backs up the file it is patching(in this case the gigantic content file that POE uses).

if you have account issues after installing the standalone client you will need to email support, they will not provide support for account issues through forum posts(you can contact them through the message center on the site though if desired)
I'm in Africa. In between slow download speeds and four-hour daily scheduled power outages, online activity can be slow. I started downloading yesterday morning, roughly 36 hours ago. The progress bar on the download is currently at 31%. So the whole download will take probably 4-5 days. And that's 24-hour days, I leave the PC on and connected to continue downloading when I go to sleep.

don't run packcheck ot the ggpkdefragmenter directly if you're using steam, always use steams internal tool to check the "game file integrity".

if you want to run the standalone version of the game and you already have steam installed:

run the standalone installer, cancel the installer when it "allocates ressources"

copy content.ggpk (the huge file) from your steam poe folder to your standalone poe folder, overwriting the existing one.

restart the standalone client, it should patch and run just fine
age and treachery will triumph over youth and skill!
Thank you for the suggestion although I'm happy to report that the download has finished, a day or so ahead of schedule. I had a minor problem with logging in but mailed GGG support and they had me up and running in literally a few minutes.

So all's well that ends well and I'm really happy to be able to use the final days of Harvest to do some crafting that I wanted done before our groves vanish into the ether forever. :D
