What will happen to path of exile 1 when 2 comes out?

it isn't a separate game. ppl need to stop calling it (GGG especially) path of exile 2. it isn't path of exile 2. its patch 4.0. path of exile 4.0

its the same game. they're essentially just changing a bunch of stuff and added another story line, another 6 acts or whatever that you can do instead of the 10 we have now. and specific ascendancies will be connected with each story line.

poe1 will have the ascendancies we have now.
poe2 will have to be played to get the new ascendancies.
once they're all unlocked once, you can play whichever you want and choose whatever you want

Wait, what? Hahaha. Ok, I somewhat feel dumb but GGG calling it PoE 2 is definitely not good and has confused me. I haven't paid any attention to anything other than hearing "PoE 2".
It seems really odd GGG calling it PoE 2 though as it suggests an entirely new game.

Basically "POE 2" could allow GGG to remove legacy features in a way that POE-2.0 doesn't.
- POE2 may not be supported on the XB1/PS4.
- POE2 may only support vulkan, change hardware requirements, change controller support etc.
- POE2 may 'assume' an SSD as standard.
- POE2 may get rid of various mechanics, clean up the item system, change the league->standard item mess etc.
Maybe I am the only one that does not like POE2.

So I hope they dont change poe1 to poe2.
I presume we will have a separate PoE 2 stash and an empty character roster. I'd hate to have to buy new character slots to be able to play the new acts. ='[.]'=

My understanding is that PoE2 is mostly marketing hype. It is a regular release of PoE just more new content than usual compared to a regular release including an alternative story line path. Both story lines will be available and one chooses which story line to play at character creation time.
Over 430 threads discussing labyrinth problems with over 1040 posters in support (thread # 1702621) Thank you all! GGG will implement a different method for ascension in PoE2. Retired!

It's more than that.
POE2 allows GGG to create a working engine, not the thing we are currently using.

f you'd have to start from scratch again in 2 or if 1 was discontinued I can't imagine people would be super stoked.
most people start all over every new league tbh x'D and it will be the same game anyways xd only thing is u can choice this 10 acts with the characters u can pick now or new acts with new characters which both play on the same engine and both can do the same atlas. just a different intro which 10 acts will be the tutorial sadly.
3.26 when?
Don't abandon us. don't turn your backs on the ones loving poe.
from what i understand it looks liek it's gonna be more like poe1.5 than poe2.

you'll still be able to play the "poe1" story line if you choose so.

both will lead to the same endgame/mapping.

imo, calling it poe2 at all is a marketing trick.
