It's the kind of thing they really need a consolidated info sticky about. The limits of macros, overlays, other external apps, how all of these things can and can't interact with each other and/or the client, and so on. Especially with just how many 3rd party tools are available for PoE at this point.

Most all of that info is available, but most of it is also scattered among different posts and comments both here and on Reddit. A lot of it is also very dated and buried beneath everything else, so it's not always easy to get the full picture.

Good on you for going directly to the source and being willing to admit your error though. Nothing wrong with that.
I have a pretty good sense of humor. I'm not German.
It is illegal, but...

I just bind these sort of skill combo's to adjacent keys and press them together, usually with a single finger...essentially a 'hard macro'. Its barely worth making into a software macro. you can also use a small blob a blu tak to join the keys...not sure if this is also illegal though.

or...do the macro anyway because there is no functional difference from the server end, and the only way to tell is if GGG has a camera watching your hands.

a macro is only allowed to perform 1 action

this could be closeing the game, open a portal or message a friend

in your case the first action would be the warcry and the second action would be leap slam
so its not allowed

Does the logout macro people use close the game down by 'logging out' or by Alt+F4?

You need two actions to logout from the game. Hit 'ESC' and then click 'logout'. If it's just Alt+F4 then it's one action.

So if people are doing it the first way, two actions with a macro is legal.

I've never used the logout macro so I'm not sure, but whenever I watch a streamer's video, it seems to me the menu first appears on the screen, and then very quickly (almost instantly, faster than I would be able to move my mouse and click) the "log out / back to character selection" menu option is clicked. In this case it seems to me it's really two actions (press ESC, then click), so it shouldn't be allowed. So how comes this macro is being used ?

Logout macro isnt just alt+f4. It is special application that close connection by some DLL before it even shut down the game. Thats more than even 10 actions done by human. Even the standard one would be two actions like someone said, ESC + click or ALT+F4.

Of course GGG wont ban players who use log-out makros because majority of them are HC players or popular streamers. GGG have no balls to enforce their own rules on the players, just as in real life law, the richer and popular people got special treatment.

People seem to be misunderstanding actions.

You can only do a single 'server-side' action with a macro. Not a single actual action.

For example, a simple macro (that most of the tools use) is a shortcut to go to your H/O. In this, they open your chat, type '/hideout', hit enter. But as far as the server is concerned, you hit one key to send one server side action (/hideout) so it is ok.

Logout macro uses a TCP disconnect. It is more effective that alt+f4 or char logout. It also has basically nothing to do with the game executable. It shuts off the ports the game is using to connect. Its closer to 'I am about to die, so I am going to yank my internet cable out' than it is to 'I am about to die, so i'll alt+f4'.

This is one of those things I never really understood why it was not allowed.

I understand trade macros that spam the API are banned, as they have a really negative impact on the trade site and the server on which it is running.

But key macros? Definitely less impactful on the server than running around with a self-curse HH build.
Sitting in HO spamming alts for 4 hours straight is peak PoE gameplay. Thanks, Chris.
Just don't use any flasks and you won't have to press any button
