Steam vs Standalone?

I switched to steam long ago, i also use an SSD. There is no load times at all, runs smooth.
GGG - Why you no?
The sad thing about having to play on standalone (yes, it is better, especially for patching) is that you don't get to benefit from local currency prices if you happen to not be from any of the 8 countries that this site support (you can change your region by clicking one of the 8 flags in the top right corner here). So when you buy points you'll have to pay in dollars, whereas on Steam the price would have been adjusted to better suit your nation. Steam just supports so many more currencies than PoE's main client does. :/

But yeah, that's the only benefit of playing this game on Steam, albeit depending on your purchase habits it might be a pretty big benefit. Well, that and the Steam overlay, if you happen to want that for some reason.

You can absolutely do both. Make purchases on Steam; use standalone to play. All you need to do is link a standalone account to your Steam and you're good to go (though if you have existing chars on Steam you'll want to contact support to do it).
I have a pretty good sense of humor. I'm not German.

To link standalone to an existing Steam account all you need to do is contact support and provide them with an email address to link (plus whatever info they want for verification). It's important to have them link it since you already have characters exclusive to Steam. You'll lose them if you link it yourself, then you'll have to contact them anyway to fix that.

No longer necessary, fyi. Log into the website with Steam (select from the log in screen), then you can go to "My Account" and add and email address/password. You can then log into the stand alone client, and your characters from Steam will be there.

I've played on standalone, so no existing chars on Steam.

Anyway, how do you do this? I've already linked my PoE account to Steam, so no need to link me the Sarno thread. I've also logged in to the website through the Steam sign-in option, however I see no Steam payment options, despite having Steam and even its overlay open.

I don't have PoE in my Steam library, however. How do you put it there, short of redownloading the whole game and just playing through Steam? Using the 'Add a Non-Steam game' option in Steam wouldn't work as that only attaches the executable so you can launch it from Steam, not tells Steam I have this title that's on their catalog and want it to recognize that (for payment options, Steam achievements, etc.)

Simply adding an email address is fine, so long as there isn't an active account associated with it. If there is it causes problems. If you played on Steam first before linking a standalone account, your Steam account (and chars) gets overwritten by the newly linked account. Support can fix it, or they can do the linking for you to start with and avoid the problem. This issue still pops up in the support forums often enough.

You need to have PoE in your Steam library and make purchases through Steam. It's not possible to make purchases on Steam using the standalone client. Anything you purchase there will be accessible no matter which client you use to actually play though.

Disable nvidia geforce experience for poe if you have that. Mine stopped working (works in other games) and now I get much better performance for some reason. From 40fps on lowest settings to 60+ on medium. No idea why
