I have started to have the same or a similar issue. I have never had any issues with PoE. I haven't played since last weekend but I have no reason to believe anything has changed. I didn't have any updates during that period. Tonight I can't load the game. I click on Path of Exile and the screen starts to show the "gears" and the program closes.
I have since tried to update my card drivers, update Windows 10, remove game and reinstall from Steam, remove game and download from PoE website, run as Admin. Always the same problem. I can play other games just fine. |

never had this in the 8 odd years i've played the game.
restart the PC? uninstal the game, and remove all folders for it, then reinstal? Steam or stand alone? Ancestral Bond. It's a thing that does stuff. -Vipermagi

I too had never problems with the game until now, just wanted to start the game and have the same problem, im starting the game, it opens up and just before i should see the ggg logo it closes itself.
The only thing that changed since i last played is a windows update. Last edited by BloodyAgent#4569 on May 16, 2020, 8:54:19 AM

The description of your crash sounds exactly like what I am seeing. In contrast to you, I didn't update windows until after it began crashing. Even so, the updates were pretty minor. I don't think the update is causing it. I have deleted all folders and reinstalled on two different disk drives, with and without Steam. Each time I get the exact same result. I feel confident it has nothing to do with my disk drives. It's also unlikely to be a Steam issue. All of my drivers are up to date but this happened before I updated anything. My girlfriend is next to me on her computer and playing just fine. No updates from Path of Exile since I was playing just fine. I have been playing the game nearly a year problem free and all through Sunday the 10th. I honestly don't know much about computers. My next thought is trying to delete temporary files and caches. Maybe something is corrupted. |

I finally fixed my issue. Complete reset to factory settings. I noticed that my sound was not working and I couldn't play videos from ESPN without errors. That's when I decided to start anew.
Problem solved. |

Hi - I had a windows update yesterday after which I get this issue, as described above, PoE at best shows the gears starting to grind then ends, sometimes it doesn't even show that and just immediately ends. It worked 2 days ago fine. I reinstalled, no good, I reinstalled Steam and PoE, no good, I updated my NVIDIA drivers, I have run CCleaner, I have made sure to run as administrator. I don't know what else to try.

1. Nuke automatic windows updates (google how to properly disable them for windows 10)
2. As far as i know, every windows update creates a restore point for your system as to how it was right before the update was applied (certain limitations apply) try that. No rest for the wicked.

I restored back a few updates and no difference. However my issues appear far greater as I also can't play videos anymore on for example YouTube. So this appears not to be a PoE issue. Looking at above person who restored to factory settings, sounds terrifying to me who isn't so PC confident 😔
