Give us a chat filter!

The quality of the chat is really poor at times. We really need some sort of chat filter option so that we only see trade relevant messages. And I think whatever mechanism used for that channel of communication should be enforced so that the mindless dribble doesn't spill over into it.

In my opinion the biggest downside to PoE right now is the community that is forming in it... Do something before you kill the community for good?

edit: So my wording seems to be upsetting some so I felt the need to clarify.

I completely support the idea of different channels for communication (LFG, trade, General, etc) and this is both the obvious and the common solution.

The reason I used the term "filter option" is because I, the player (not PoE), should be able to have some control over what I want to see in aggregate form from all the channels. This is not that difficult a solution and can add a ton of value to the individual. Example 1: I like helping newbs, so anytime someone uses the word "help" that message shows up in my chat. Example 2: I'm an active trader so ANYTIME an item is linked I want to see that message.

See where I'm going with this? Custom filters to try to ensure you get all the value out of chat while playing without necessarily being distracted by white noise.

it's coming, as is in-game moderation, they will also soon be renaming characters whose names violate the ToS.

yeah great, so we can go through the whole game not being able to talk to anyone because the auto-squelch is discriminatory to normal IM style messaging.

you know
the way people normally talk
everywhere but on forums

freedom of speech is freedom of information is freedom; make communication clunky in an online multiplayer game and you'll shave a couple of years off its lifespan. it's really pointless to play an inherently social game in a completely antisocial manner.

games like command & conquer, warcraft, Diablo, for example, gained the level of popularity that they did because they offered simplistic but unimpeded communications between players.

now yeah, I get it, not everyone wants an open forum of conversation in their games. I myself don't understand the apparently inherent difficulty in not reading the text, but I do understand that people don't want to feel like they're jumping into a shark pool every time they want to share an opinion.

so, even though you're all obviously a bunch of oldschool guys to even want to make this game, and obviously brilliant to do it in a manner that will allow you to have the controlling decision in where it goes, I cannot stress enough the importance of free speech in this game. understandably, people who simply want to get on with it and trade items or talk to each other without all the inherent irreverence and hostility of the internet should have a venue for it. but it should not come at the expense of the people who do want that open forum. socializing communication is the number one trick in the Despot's Cookbook, and the feeling of being controlled will just demoralize a population of players in the same way it demoralizes the population of a dictatorship.

I'll bet this discussion has already been had internally, but if you absolutely have to put in a chat filter, and today it seems to be the hot rage, then it's essential you do so in a way that still allows for natural, normal human communication. a client-side toggle, separately moderated channels, anything but an overarching, all-inclusive suppression of speech.

I wouldn't touch diablo 3 with someone else's stick. firstly, because it is not a diablo game (despite the brand name, the exclusion of any skill or attribute points has stripped it of that honor), and secondly because chat will be awkwardly regulated just like in all of blizzard's "2.0" games. path of exile is the best hope for the survival of the torch diablo 2 carried for over a decade.

help me path of exile, you're my only hope!
I think they should keep it optional too, but geez, you can just say that instead of ranting.
What OP is really talking about is multiple types of global channels. Like a Trade channel for only trade related chat. That kind of thing. He isn't referring to word filtering. His nomenclature is odd.
I think the goal here is to have separate channels for different purposes. Trade channel, newbie help channel etc. The OP isn't saying that all chat needs to be filtered and moderated. Some people don't care to read all the D3 vs. PoE or ATI vs. Nvidia conversations. Some people are easily offended by 'abusive' speech and they want to have a way to avoid that without missing out on the beneficial side of the community. This way it's up to each person what they want to read and what they want to ignore.

I'm under the impression all of this is already in the works.

They are going to add more channels, and mute/ban people for blatantly offensive rants. That's all, the sky isn't falling. So long as you don't scream racist comments or something else completely out of line, you can say whatever you want. Freedom of speech does not mean you won't suffer consequences for your actions, just like in real life.

I've found two ways I can unhide global chat - play when most of North America is asleep (hard for me given my work hours and that I'm in US/Central) or get out of Normal and into the higher difficulties. Otherwise almost everything in global chat, from the names to the conversations, is utterly vile. And global chat in normal difficulty in the hardcore league is barely better than default.

I would happily pay for access to a separate chat channel or league for subscribers/supporters. LOTRO, DDO, City of Heroes - all free to play with "VIP" programs. I favor COX's separate VIP server instead of limiting what free players can do like DDO does. That way supporters can choose whether they want to mix it up with everyone in the normal leagues/servers/global chat or not.

I really like the idea of a supporter only channel.
