Where the hell is "North" in POE?

So you guys agree on on "top", do you? Let me fuck that up for you.

I always call the circled door/architect "top".

What? That's clearly east, because the Temple map is rotated about 45° counter-clockwise.
However, I refer to it as "right".

I think it is not set like always and depend on map overlay. During Delve "right" path on Nikoc diagram is actually "up" in mine, so North cannot be "up". Its probably "left" but one map will be overayed in one direction and other in other and North with that but generally "up" (left or right) will be proper direction for "north".

EDIT

Confused sides, corrected.

Reminds me of my friend.

I always do maps along borders. (had freduent exceptions this league due to requirement of killing mobs)

He, on the other hand, clear maps in a completely random style. Just moves in the directions of nearest mob he can find. Leave loot behind, leave mobs behind.
If we look at the act 2 map and go by the names of the zones and where they connect, then top left is north, bottom right is south, bottom left is west and accordingly top right is east.
I make dumb builds, therefore I am.

I'm more in line with the OP's first picture. I call yours top-right.

Actually yeah Incursion actually does give a frame of reference for where directions point if they were presented in a top down view (you can see this by pressing V to view the temple map as you are in Azoatl). There's also an outdoor section in Azoatl as well so it might be useful for giving an idea on which diretcion is north (and not just up, left, right, etc).

My friend suggested that it's because of the skew in the map rendering, my question is, why is it presumed that north is right, instead of left, given a circumstance where the map IS skewed, why is it presumed right?

It's well known in psychology that when faced with an equal choice—in general—people who are right handed will turn right. Similarly, people who are left handed will turn left. In short, you tend to follow your dominant hand when "randomly" going left or right. (Also, more people are right handed than left handed.)

It's an Isometric view, so North is in the 2 O'clock direction.
Delve and the Temple have definitively proven that north in this game is up-left.

So both you and your friend were actually wrong.

The labyrinth is the really fucked up place, though. If the map of the labyrinth is correct and maps to the labyrinth room entrances and exits, then north in the labyrinth is actually down left.
