Where the hell is "North" in POE?
Hello Spectators and Contributors,
Friend and I have just about had enough of battling over where north is in Path of Exile. I'm sick to death of saying "South" and this bloke dissapearing in the complete opposite fucking direction. I have prepared some illustrations to further help understand the problem: My Reference of North: ![]() My friends reference of North: ![]() Now, if you ask a complete stranger, who has never played POE before, and showed him the following map, and asked where North is, what would be the default, logical response? ![]() There are a couple of issues with his hypothesis of what "North" actually is. Issue #1: There is no axis of symmetry, no X and Y axis depicted anywhere in Path of Exile UI. Issue #2: Where is north on a Circular map? Issue #3: There is an "assumption" of where north is, instead of using true north (up) as top-dead center of the monitor for reference. Issue #4: My friend suggested that it's because of the skew in the map rendering, my question is, why is it presumed that north is right, instead of left, given a circumstance where the map IS skewed, why is it presumed right? ![]() --- This is a universally, widely understood comprehension of "North', yet my friend is wired with the idea that North is, top-right of the map. I'm honestly growing tired of debating this with him, and having him wander around the map in the wrong direction, please someone help to settle this. Based on my understanding map is on a 45 degree skew - north is the second photo is right.
I agree with your friend. Regards, Your Friend |

Top right, lower left, straight left keep running that way, you missed the turn. These all work well for me and my friend.
Up is always up on the monitor. I also got sick of compass coordinates in a game of hallways. Duped: a term we use frequently in the delve, when the cart (that used to be a torture device) is constantly trying to kill you! Interesting friends in this game for sure ;) I will wear your ghost and you will die twice, against me and for me.
That is some cold blooded shit to say... |

In situations like this you are both right.
Try this next with your friend and you will get even more craZy,ask him to go left or right on map and see where he will go.Thrn tell him up or down instead of North or south and see where he goes. All you will find out, there are people out there that knows directions and others who have car crashes because of space awareness and direction mishandling. Trust me you can't change his mind and he can't change yours. All you have to do is figure out his up and play along Bye bye desync!

If my mate was reading the map, crashing would be the least of our worries, might end up in the wrong state.
I agree with Up being up though, im ok with that it makes more sense than north being the top of the screen. Regards, The Friend |

" LOL! This was the first established parameter we agreed on. IT WILL ALWAYS BE SCREEN LEFT, RIGHT, UP, DOWN. But I do say, mouse hand right, or your other right hand from time to time... I'm surprised he hasn't killed me :) Maybe that's it. up, down, kb, mouse! Great times :) I will wear your ghost and you will die twice, against me and for me.

But wait a minute. GGG is in New Zealand and thus everything is upside down from northern hemisphere players so who the hell knows which way is up or north. GGG openly embraces the "upside down" with Delirium challenge league mechanic. Such stranger things we have to deal with to play here.
On a more serious note I too think with the PoE iso-view that North is upper-right corner of our view. "You've got to grind, grind, grind at that grindstone..."
Necessity may be the mother of invention, but poor QoP in PoE is the father of frustration. The perfect solution to fix Trade Chat: www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/2247070 |

The top of my screen is north/up. Bottom is south/down.
Just because they draw some arbitrary boundaries doesn't change that. If you take a paper map and use scissors to cut it, you can cut it any shape you want and it won't change north, south, east, west. As a former draftsman, if I remember right, the convention for an isometric view is from the front upper right. So if you view a house from the front, the default isometric view would see the front, right side, and top of the house. The back, bottom, and left side would be hidden. If you translate that to a drone with a camera, and assume you initially started in first person view facing north, then your friend would be right. The drone would retreat away from the first person view, then fly to the right and up. |

PoE uses "Isometric View", so the 2nd image is the more correct one.
