It's not a spoon fed 'this guy is the bad guy and you're the good guy who gets them' kind of storyline. You have to work for it a little bit.

The atlas story has definitely changed over time.

TL;DR -- You did bad shit in Oriath -- Get sent to Wraeclast (aka Shithole) where there are bad motherfkers all over the place -- Kill the motherfkers -- Find there are motherfkers on Oriath as well -- Kill them too -- Ancient gods awakened -- Kill those as well -- Find a map device -- Plenty of motherfkers left to be killed in map areas -- Kill them all too.

You, pantsless and defenseless, are dumped on the shores of a continent gone wrong. As it turns out, the continent is made entirely of compressed vaal orbs. Every speck of organic life that has arisen or come to rest on this landmass is permeated with vaalium ions, hence the ubiquitous corruption.

So why is Oriath also full of assholes? Welp, as it turns out, cramming virtue gems into your brain and spinal cord also leaches vaalium salts into your CSF. Virtue gems are basically pure concentrated crystalline vaalite.

Every time someone with virtue gems dies, their body decays, releasing organovaalium compounds into the water and the soil. The net vaalium ion concentration gets higher as you move up the food chain from plants, to grazing animals, to predators, to well-fed residents of Oriath and some areas of Wraeclast.

The exceptions are the Maraketh up in the mountains, who grow all their own shit in planters fertilized by rhex poo, and the Azmerian villages, who eat boar raised only on the acorns of a type of oak that doesn't absorb any vaalions.

You, with your meddling ways, came along and corrupted the mountain springs of Highgate by spilling beast guts into it (the beast, by definition, has tissues absolutely saturated with organovaalium compounds); and disrupted the forest ecology of Azmeria (along with Einhar) such that boars started eating the remains of the adds of all the beasts you bagged. Which are, of course, riddled with vaalic oxides.

Your job: to contain, chelate away, and decorrupt the biosphere of Wraeclast.

Ya that's the plot summary I go by. A bunch of crazy people do crazy things that don't make sense, without any logical or consistent motivations, and they all die to a mass murdering hypocrit that goes mute half-way through. The end.
