Presumably as most players, I haven't read campaign texts. So I have almost zero clue what's happening, except that we're stranded on an island for criminals where we're fighting gods. We're entering the intestines of some "beast" where demons are waiting for us, a mermaid and, later on, a spider are having a wedding each where we're the gift, there's an Innocence angel and a Sin black angel until we finally defeat Kitava - for whatever reason.
Is there a TL;DR on who all those bosses are and why we're fighting them? And what's up with the maps (I assume Zana's linked to it somehow but not anymore since 3.9 .. )? I assume the story's well thought out, but (at least for my taste) not really well presented when you don't want to read dozens of dialogues.
well ggg doesnt like to explain much about lore, its basicaly random pieces of lore here and there. we have to interact with npcs and ask 1by1 what is happening and what they think of this npc or the other.

A TL;DR would be way to short to explain, but I'll try. It'll be a long TL;DR....
You are a convict exiled, by Dominus, on a cursed continent. You later find out that shit is cursed because all previous civilizations fucked shit up with supernatural forces.
Once there, you begin to survive, but eventually get caught up in Dominus and Piety' plans to reshape the world. You kill them thus taking revenge for the exile. Now you find out who causes shit to be twisted, Malachai with the help of The Beast. Aided by Dialla, his former lover, you kill him and the beast.
Now you go back to Oriath, and get caught up in a slave rebellion. For plot reasons you side with the slaves, because duh, and end up meeting 3 Gods, Innocence (presumably good, but he fucked up), Sin (presumably bad, but he wants to kill all the gods; so he's in a weird place), and Kitava (he's 1000000% bad). Reason why the gods show up is because you killed the Beast, which was Sin's creation to stop the Gods.
From this point on your motivation is killing all the Gods; minus Sin and Innocence, since they seem the only ones not keen on killing humans. Yes, more gods make an appearence after the beast died; and you need their power to kill Kitava. Also, all the Gods were once humans who ascended. Because of personal tragedies, or pride, or other strong emotions they were all twisted.
Now maps:
Once upon a time, a bad Templar called Venarius found a curious device. He had the device be examined by Valdo Caserius (probably spelled wrong). Valdo found out that the device transports you into a dreamlike world, which was ruled by the Elder (an immortal being that wants to consume existence itself). Because of the Elder and Venarius, Valdo lost his mind and became the Shaper. Now the Shaper and the Elder are playing cat and mouse inside this dreamlike place.
Years later, Zana (Valdo's daughter)used the device to find clues about her father. Helped by exiles (basically us)she manages to stop the Elder; RIP Shaper also.
But now, she finds out that the exiles are becoming corrupted by the maps (the dream realm) so she destroys the device to lock them inside, her included.
Now, another group of exiles (us again), are asked by a Templar to help him find his brother. His bro is in the maps...duh. And now we must fight the old corrupted exiles (us from the past) before they get to corrupt reality.

Step 1: survive exile (act 1-2)
Step 2: take revenge (act 3)
Step 3: destroy the source of all evil (act 4)
Step 4: tunrs out the source of all evil was actually good. Now go kill some gods, because they are not nice. (act 5-6-7-8-9-10)
Step 5: crisis of infinite Wraeclasts. (maps)

Directly upon our arrival we start seeing shit and are slowly becoming twisted and drive insane like the previous exiles (Delirium) due to bad drop rates.
I assume this is where they'll start tying in as to why they're (Looks like that group who go on about The First Ones, don't know their name) going to kill us and send in the new 'exiles'(?) in PoE 2.0, although it'll probably have a few more leagues of fluff before that.

Wow, thank you so much. I've played this game for too long without paying attention and began reading finally. This really helps!
