What will happen to 6 linked items in Path of Exile 2?

As others hav said, “it’s only standard.” I still stand by they will do a blanket every skill gem is 6L. It’s probably the simplest solution for them, and they will want to avoid as much of the the whining as possible to support about ruining builds. The majority of players ignore standard anyways.

do you mean on standard? Because if the game of links is completely removed I will be very disappointed. 6 linking a skill gem should be at least as difficult as 6 linking an item was. Ideally more difficult.

Yeah, the change won’t be relevant to a fresh league since there won’t be any. 6 linking a skill gem will be roughly 1/3 as difficult since you will have ~9 instead of only 1-2. Of course GGG could change their minds. Items will no longer have random links, sockets, or socket colors. All that is migrating to the gems themselves.

So when Oni Goroshi drops you might get a cool sword and a choice of six linked gems to choose one or a currency item that gives you a six linked gem upon use.

I can live with that. I really want farming the TS to stay a big deal.

There’s a couple automatic 6L items. I presume they’ll get some balance to make them competitive, possibly an extra socket like Tabula.
I'd imagine the simplest way to convert it would be to grant every current 6 link armour a new implicit along the lines of "skill gems socketed in this item have 5 sockets", and the give the item the 2 sockets for skill gems that will be the new standard.

That way every character will still have their current 6 linked skills available but will simply gain the possibility of a second 6 link, and it is tied directly to their current 6 linked items.

This would also be a smart way of converting items like tabula to the new system as well.

Best idea I have seen so far.

If my speculation is correct, items will still have a varied number of slots, it's just that each of those slots will effectively be a 6L. To that end, I expect that current 6L items will just have the maximum number of gem slots.
