Coming back to POE after a 5-year hiatus
Hello POE community! To say it's been awhile is an understatement - Just checked my last post (prior to this) and it's in April 2014. I've played quite a few games since I last quit POE but it's gem mechanic has always been it's unique selling point, and I've decided to come back again since an old friend of mine started playing it on PS4 and I recently found that a new friend from another hobby also plays POE.
I find myself pretty damn lost, though! To give an idea of how long I've been away - When I last quit, the Act 3 boss was the end of the game and cyclone was a new fairly new gem. I see that there are 10 acts now (WTF!) and a whole host of other new mechanics. Is there anywhere/any resource where I can pick up a quick overview of everything that's changed, instead of reading through 5 years of patch notes? Also, would it be better for me to start a new character, or resume my 78 Facebreaker Marauder who probably has like 20 respecs at this point? Cheers folks, hoping to transition back into POE as smoothly as possible! Last bumped on Sep 28, 2019, 4:19:20 PM

Roll a new character.

There's ascendancies now, so you should start a new character.

Ah okay, I just read up on it. It seems to be like a further specialization from the main classes? Starting a new character sounds good anyway, I don't even remember how to spec my old build anymore.
Out of curiosity though, can old characters progress into this new Ascendancy mechanic? Thanks for the Gamepedia link - Looks like I have to slowly start picking all the new stuff up, really lost, heh. Last edited by _avenged_#2732 on Sep 28, 2019, 3:46:17 PM

" Yes, they can. But since you've only played till Act 3, I don't think it'd work for you without going back through the story areas (including all the new ones) and getting all the trials to unlock it. Anyway, it's probably best you just think of yourself as a new player by this point. As such, I'd recommend you watch Engineering Eternity's Beginner's Guide series to get (somewhat) up to scratch - https://youtu.be/lEZtq6FSebE And for a written beginner's site, try out Twilight Strand - https://www.twilightstrand.com/ There are also beginner-friendly build guides out there if you just want to be able to get into the game to play it out. Two of them even date from your time (even older in fact), yet have been kept consistently up-to-date right upto now - Enki's Arc Witch (spellcaster) and Sovyn's Lazy Pally (melee). https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/1147951 https://www.pathofexile.com/forum/view-thread/105920 Also, if starting a new character, choose the current temp league i.e Blight. Standard will screw you over with its prices after all these years of inflation, plus there's also far fewer players there nowadays. Besides, Blight is a rather interesting league mechanic for you to try out. Welcome back! :) Last edited by Exile009#1139 on Sep 28, 2019, 4:02:42 PM

" Cheers man! Those links look really useful. It's 0417 in the morning here but I'll be sure to check them out as soon as I can. Yeah I do agree, with my knowledge outdated by 5 years and so hazy, I might as well start the game anew. I'll decide on league depending on what my friends are playing I guess. I still have some Standard goodies (including a really nice pair of legacy Facebreakers) so if I start there, I'll just consider it a largely solo-self-found character with some twinking. |
