It's quite ok for slower attackers too. It's in effect when it's needed the most. Against tough monsters.
so you need 7-9 skillpoints investment, 1 support gem and 10% mana reserved for 110% increased impale effect + 100% Chance to impale. for my build i get for 8 skillpoints +~20% dmg, for another skill gem +30% dmg and warbanner for dread banner +~10%dmg = 60% more dmg.
so i need to get 8 hits with impale to outvalue this. 100+121+142+163+184+205+205+205 : 8 = 165,6% more dmg after 8 hits. without being a zerker or using cyclone you need to stack alot of attack speed to be make it useful.

equips random phys spell
i didnt mean phys spells who get ele convert like divine ire or wave of conviction, i mean spells like bladefall, bladevortex, ethereal knives, bear trap, seismic trap, unearth and shockwave totem to give them any advantage for going full phys by giving them the abilty to function with impale and bleed to compete with elemental dmg builds.
It's more like after 5 hits. The gem itself has a 15% more multiplier. That's a max attack time of 2 seconds even on a slow as ass character with a mace or something. Also there is no need to restack it. It's useful as it is against the handful of mobs that matter.

I'm doing my math correctly, i was swapping ruthless support in what gives me +45%dmg minus the 15% from impale is +30% more dmg.
but my main reason for this thread was the idea to make pure physical spells profit from bleed and impale too.

Impale makes the monster take 10% of base (unmitigated) damage per hit for the next 5 hits so basically it's 50% more damage when you impale.
A 21/20 impale support will give you the following:
-40% chance to impale on hit
-16% more physical damage
-61% increased impale effect.
With the 61% increased impale effect you have 80.5% more damage when you impale. Since the gem only give you 40% chance to impale it factors to 32.2% more damage. Besides, the 16% more damage scales multiplicatively for a total of 53.352% more damage from support.
