Whats the purpose of animation cancelling?

Honest question.

Some of the skill have a longer action time that would lock you into an attack. Without the ability to cancel it, you were vulnerable to telegraphed attacks that you could have avoided otherwise. Best example is probably the Vaal Oversoul's slam attack. Easy to avoid... if you're not locked into an attack.

You have to have played that style of melee to appreciate it.

To give more control and "flow", and to better reward reaction skills.

Whats the purpose when most players have 5+ aps.

If we were super slow attks i could understand its benefit, cancel and get out of the fire.

Not all players have 5 aps. Especially not before reaching end game. For you, the only game that counts may be T15+ maps. You'd be amazed by the amount of players only playing the acts.

As I said... you had to have played a build that focused on slow attacks. Not many players have.

I have an ed char (1.34 aps) and its driving me crazy.

I cant see anyone successfully using animation cancelling defensively. With the server lag and instant enemy abilities, it seems moot.

Vaal is one of the few bosses that has a super slow charged up attk. Those arent threats in modern poe.

What is a build that uses slower attacks? Some sort of bleed/stun? My cyclone is about to hit 90 and is kind of boring, gonna make a new one soon

thanks

The heavy strike/stun lock build is a pretty good example of a slower attack. Not sure it would benefit that much from animation canceling though... it kind of centers around dealing with the problem of NOT being able to cancel.
There are several boss fights where I (previously) swapped out Multistrike because of how long it locks you in place (no matter your APS). Now I no longer have to; for two reasons: Animation Canceling and the fact that Multistrike sucks.

Then you're unlucky with your server, or just don't have a very reaction-based play style. Even though you don't necessarily notice it that much, the potential reaction time IS lowered. Animation canceling + skill queuing is nice.

Several of the legion rares have long wind ups that you can avoid if you don't kill them outright.
